Inop Instrument Lights/Bed Light/Map Lights - '89 XLT SC Lariat

I just purchased this '89 F-150 XLT SC Lariat and am purging the bugs. Thanks in advance for your help.

None of the dash/instrument illumination lights work with the parking/headlights on. Checking the fuse and the wiring diagram, it looks like these are on the same circuit as the map lights and bed light, neither of which consistently work either. The fuse is good, the bed light bulb is good, and the overhead light in the cab works. The map lights will not switch on with the key off, but will work with the key on. I've cleaned all of the grounds that are easliy accessable under the dash

Where's a good place to start? It seems as though these are related issues, no?

The instrument lighting comes thru the rheostat in the headlight switch as does the power for the bed light - may just be a bad headlight switch. The rheostat will burn out.

I read elsewhere in here that you can remove the light switch and lightly sand the surface of the rheostat resistor, and that may reduce intermittent resistance enough to solve your problem. My son's 89 lariat and my 76 F-250 both suffer from similar problems. You're not alone!!
