New Tremic TKO Transmission

Ok and howdy from Iraq. I just got my latest Classic Truck mag and they have an article on this TKO transmission. They make it sound like it will bolt up to any of our engines. Has anyone here heard of it or is using it. The website is www.ttcautomotive.com and the article is on this transmission only. If you have can you tell me/us about it.

Like the Tremec T5 for Mustangs the bellhousing on a Y block has to be modified for the TKO to bolt up. I have pics of a T5 mounted to my 292 with a modified bellhousing from www.Ford-Y-Block.com

The modification is easy. Weld a threaded bung on the bellhousing. 3 of the bolt holes will match and the index hole in the center is the correct size.

If you want to use the existing clutch setup you have to buy the bracket and modified through out bearing from www.Ford-Y-Block.com to replace the bracket that bolted to the side of the 3 speed trans.

Is welding cast iron easy? It used to be pretty hard to weld on cast iron.

So then its the same as using the T5 then. I was wondering if it was about the same. I know that several members here have had problems getting the stick where they wanted to and not have it cut into the seating area. That was one of the reasons I shied away from the T5 transmission. I will have to look into it more since I will be working on it again real soon.

The Tremec 5 speed has a different bolt pattern than the BW T5. But the shifter may be in the same place as a Mustang T5.

I scrounged the shifter off a S10 T5. It's about 8" forward of the Mustang shifter.

The Tremec TKO is a new design and is available to fit many applications for Ford and GM. The flexibility of the shifter location makes it great for custom applications. Since it is available to fit late model Ford Mustangs it would have the same bolt pattern as the T5. Here is a quote from TTC

"The new line of TREMEC TKO 5-speed transmissions was designed with flexibility in mind. The unique internal shift-rail system accommodates up to eight different shifter locations, ranging from 14” to 27” from the face of the bell housing. An optional shifter provides a 2” offset, left or right of the centerline, virtually guaranteeing a perfect fit in any stock console. The rear cross-member bolt pattern will fit both Ford and GM applications. All models come standard with an electronic and mechanical speedometer pick-up. Other standard features include a neutral safety switch and a back-up light sensor. Adding to the flexibility is a high-performance, billet aluminum, short-throw shifter."
