There is more going at the front of the crank than the rear of the crank and things like super chargers can be added to the front of the crank increasing it's load. The rear oly has the flywheel, not timing chain and no drive belts adding to the front load plus the front of the crank sticks out past the block surface giving it leverage where as the back of the crank is just about flush with the motor.

Thats a good question and the 460 motors have been known to break or they do when the y run the 460 in place of the 370 which has a thicker crank snout.
I'm no expert on this but it made good sense to me. Whay else would ford have changed it? It would have been alot easier to leave it as the 302 order. Cams could have been kept the same saving costs and so on. Oh well who really knows why and I guess it doesn't much matter.
