I know this is going to be a stupid question, but here goes....

I have a 98 Explorer with 4wd and have noticed recently that my 4wd high and low dash light indicators are periodically flashing, does this mean some sort of service is required, possibly low on fluids..??

I'd start by pulling the codes. When the lights are blinking do you notice anything different in how it drives?

It most likely means there is something wrong with your range selector motor.
