ARE cap glass breakage

I closed the cover/door/whatever on my ARE cap the other day, and it shattered into a billion bits...

Anyone else have that happen?

I'm assuming up front there's no way the warranty covers that, but is it possible it IS covered?

I'm working on the theory that it got scratched somehow... I kinda wonder if it was hit by a rock that happened to be in the neighbor's kids hand before it "accidentally" hit the glass (like the other rocks thrown at my house were an "accident")...

thanks for any thoughts.

Sporty_Ford is starting off with a positive reputation.
I would take it to the local ARE dealer and see what they say. Also take plenty of pics.

Thanks! I haven't even called them yet, I'm dreading the $300+ cost of a new door.

Why not buy a piece of polycarbonate (my favor) or Lexan and cut it to fit? U.S. Plastics sells it cheap. Make sure you use GE Silicon II to seal it.

Good point - I guess it can be tinted too...

Problem is, I'd probably need a template, there is no frame, the glass was the door.

Hope you don't have the "Z" Series as that has a slight curve to it. Would think ARE would know they have a problem and would go to a plastic. The work truck windows were breaking all the time, or broken into.

As long as the curve was not great, the poly will be fine. Most glass windows are curved for strength, not fit and shape. It is easy to bend with heat using the right tools (US Plastic sells them).

If you go 1/4 it will pretty much be indestructable. I made wood double hung windows out of 2x3 SYP and used 1/4 poly. Wrapped a sledge hammer in a towel and pounded it. Held up fine. Even the 1/8 stuff inside a custom bay window held up to a bare 5 pound sledge though it deformed a bit around impact spots. You can buy the stuff with the hardened silicon glaze if you live in a salted road area so it does not cloud over time.

The mirrored Lexan might be the thing for a truck cap.
