You will ultimately get the best flow with no muffler. On my 03 FX4, I put true dual exhuast "2 seperate pipes all the way back" from the cats back. 2.5" with 3" tips. The smaller 3" tips keeps it from being really loud with loud crackling sound compared to that of certain mufflers or even glass packs. The truck has a great deep sound but not too loud at all, and once you obviously hit overdrive the sound mellows out nicely. I can definately tell the difference in the power band with no muffler as well.

Your trying to say you lost power? hm...I used to have a 2001 4.2L V6 and I took the muffler off and ran a single pipe straight out the side and didn't notice anything. But now that I have a 2005 5.4L I want to take 2 of the 4 cats off and run true duals angled out the back. 2.5" pipe with 4" tips. That is my dream....but I don't want my truck to run bad after I do somethin like that..Do yall think it would?

This is the exact setup that i have, but i run them from the cats back. Don't take the cats off. You'll really like the sound.

I posted on this a long time ago, but probably good to surface the topic from time to time. I went the direct muffler replacement route and kept all the factory plumbing intact. I spent $85 at a local muffler shop for a Raven muffler and labor to weld it up. Sounds growly and deep, but not too loud. Can't beat the price and if it all falls down in 5 years I will probably get a low cost Jegs cat back or something.
