1977 Powerstroke Conversion
Hello Fello FTEs,
I recently purchased a 1977 Ford F250 Ext cab 4x4 with a rebuilt 460 and C-6. I had previously owned a 1979 F-150 4x4 that I converted from 400M to built 429 and got pretty decent fuel mileage (~14 MPG hwy) so I was quite surprised when this one maxed at about 9 Mpg on my way home from Portland, OR.
Now, I know this sounds kind of strange, but I really prefer the 77-79 series trucks and am not about to let Bush and Cheney with their oil tycoon cronies spoil my fun, so I am looking at converting my new 4x4 to a Powerstroke. Has anyone on this forum tried to do this? I am looking for someone with some experience here, but will blaze the trail if none can be found. I am planning on swapping out the engine, A4OD trans, and transfer case.

I think you will spend alot more money on the power stroke engine and conversion materials. I would also think that the fun you would rob Bush and Cheney of would not even come close to the fun you would be robbed of in such an engine swap. LOL.
Not that I think they really get any fun in knowing that the current world situation is robbing some of the prestige from their place in history as a successful administration. (better than the last one though)
It sounds to me like a heqq of alot of work, but definately an interesting project. You are not the only one I have heard of with this consideration. I have not seen anyone actually successfully perform this but do wish you luck. Keep us posted in your progress and take notes to guide others in your foot steps. You never know, I might try it if it works out well for you.

Thanks all for your responses. I'll try Phinxter's recommendation and look under engine swaps. I saw the Cummins conversion as well, but they went with a 5 Spd. manual and basically I am willing to do the hard work (the conversion), but to lazy to shift the rest of the time.
I figured that the powerstroke would be a better fit than the Cummins, although I foudn a whole Cummins drivetrain last weekend for 3500.00. I'll let you all know what I find through regular posts to this thread.

Looks like you found it. We have this forum for engine swaps.
None of these conversions will pay for themselves in fuel savings. They are fun to do tho. Unfortunately unless you find a buyer that really understands engines, electronics and is a mechanic it ruins resale value also. That does not stop me from messing with my truck tho.

Torque1st - I find it hard to believe that the conversion will not pay for itself. I drive quite a ways at least twice a year (about 4000 miles) and usually put about 20000 miles a year on a vehicle. I recently drove this truck 663 miles on about 100 gallons of gas which means an average of about 6.63mpg. Even if were to only see an improvement to 17Mpg (which I believe is low for a Cummins or a PowerStroke on the highway) and the conversion cost me $5,000....
Let's do the math:
24000 miles / 6.63mpg = 3619 Gallons per year * $2.30gal = $8325.00 per year for gas
24000 miles / 17mpg = 1411 Gallons per year * $2.30gal = $3247.00 per year for Diesel
Savings = $8325.00 (gas) - 3247.00 (diesel) = $5077.00
Looks like I would pay for the conversion in one year if the conversion cost me $5,000.

I want to do the same thing

What I found out is that the PowerStroke is too heavy for the truck (at least that is the general consensus. I think I am going to go with the Cummins conversion instead. Take a look at www.fordcummins.com.

alot of work
i didnt swap the 7.3 in but i swaped bodys because the total drivetran works together. I even swapped the floor and fire wall because you have to cut the floor and fire wall or body lift but still have to mount air to air cooler if its a later model and modify the bed for length. I got alot! of welding to do and fitment. But its not a cummins! (love cummins but its to easy and everyone is doing it) so its Make specific(and yes i know cummins was designed by ford).
