aftermarket Bronco tailgates?

I saw an aftermarket tailgate shell on broncograveyard for $90...OEM was around $275. Are the aftermarket ones decent enough? It would be going on a 1979 Bronco I will be 4 wheelin with...not going for show winning body or anything. Just want something that will work and hold up.

That be lookin' like a pickup tailgate. I've toyed with the idea of using one of those, I think its a cleaner design, but of course, you don't have the rear window then.

I'd be fine with a pickup tailgate...planning on getting a soft top for the Bronco anyway. And like you said...cleaner lookin than the one with window. I'll have to contact the graveyard to see if it will fit.

The latch points are different on the pickup t-gate and the bronco tailgate is a lot thicker due to the window mechanism inside. Its not an impossible swap but may be more trouble than its worth in the long run.

HOLY SH@T...just looked at the price of the Bronco tailgate...it is $950!!! I didn't see an aftermarket one listed. That's ridiculous.

Keep checking eBay. They have a company that sells reproduction Bronco Tailgates for around two three hundred from time to time, and right now, there's a couple of auctions for used ones.

Found one for 270 bucks

I am replacing my taligate on my 92 Bronco . I found an empty shell that fits 87-93 Broncos for 270.00 bucks. Then you have to prime and paint it,another 190 at EARL SCHEIB Then after that you have a collision shop install it. I found one shop that will do it for 150 bucks . Thats if the tracks inside the my current tailgate are good. So I figure about 650.00 for the total job. Good luck

Check the red link in my signature guys. The process of replacing the gate isn't that complicated and there are artciles and tech writeups all over the place for doing it yourself. The OEM units ARE expensive and they aren't going to get any cheaper considering the fact that I doubt Ford sees much need to keep making them since they haven't built the Bronco for nearly ten years now. The after market pricetag fluctuates dramatically at times too. Price of steel, the current demand for the units, etc. Keep your eyes open, the Graveyard usually has the aftermarket ones for a decent price from time to time.
