Recall 04B23 (Butyl Pad)

The forum Search is down so...

My truck has the butyl pad and it looks like my paint is starting to bubble. I havent taken it in yet (obviously). Im assuming the paint was not bubbly from the factory...at least Im pretty sure it wasnt. Anyone had bubbly paint due to the butyl pad yet?

I had mine fixed prior to any evidence of there being a problem with the pad. Just a FWIW.

It's supposedly used in production of the box. I just had mine removed and they washed my truck inside and out. Nice!

I had mine done this morning. There was no rust or bubbling. They took the pad off and sprayed black stuff over the spot. Took about 30 minutes.

I don't blame you for asking. I looked several times for the butyl pads on my Styleside. Butyl pads are thin sheets of aluminum sandwiched between layers of vinyl. Each pad would be approx 3/16" thick, and 8"x3" in rectangular dimension.

Mine were painted the same color as the underside. Lay on your back right under your exhaust pipe ending. Look up, and on the inside of the fender metal will be the butyl pads, that is, if you have any. Some reported only one butyl pad, I had 3.

I made an appointment with local Ford. They had my rig for 7 hours, then phoned me that they could not do the job as they did not have the kit. Yes, there is a kit that Ford put out. I brought my rig home and scraped the butyl pads off with a long, sharpened length of metal. The butyl pads are attached to the inner fender metal with sloshed on black adhesive. The adhesive is sloshed such that it has holidays where humidity can accumalate. This is what causes rust.

I scraped off my butyl pads. Used gasoline to dissolve and wipe off the excess adhesive. Then I shot primer paint, two coats, to cover the area of the removed butyl pads.

If Ford could have done my removal as they were supposed to I would have had them do it. But to know in advance what Ford had to do, make me sweat an appointment, then have my rig for 7 hours, then tell me I have to make another appointment......that was way over the top.

Those who get a red lead, black heat primer, or any other unmatching color to cover the area that the butyl pads occupied are in line to be asked by a future buyer if the vehicle had been wrecked. That is why I chose a matching color to shoot my butyl pad area.
