What engine do I have?
I have a 64 f100 that my dad owned since 1975. He was told a new long block was installed in it a few years before he bought the truck. The door plate shows it as a 223 6 cyl. The casting date on the block is D2ae-6015 which I think is 1972 which checks out. My question is would this be a 223 or maybe a 240. Did they manufacture 223's after 64 for replacements? Any guesses what this 6 cyl is?

With that number it's a 240/300 . Any 223 engine after 64 was usually a rebuilt assy. There may have been some left over that were new units, but these were probably few and far between and were expensive. In all my years in parts, it was hard to sell a new assy, when rebuilts were so much cheaper. Seems odd that a 240/300 would be put in a 64. I would think that it would be easier and cheaper to put a 223 in. Is it definitely a 64 and not a mis titled 65? A serial number would confirm.

Here goes, your truck was born in May 1964 in San Jose. It came with a 223 engine, a manual transmission, and a set of 4:10 gears with 2 wheel drive. It was turquoise in color. The engine presently in the truck is not a 240/300. That is where things get interesting. That D2AE does mean 1972. I wouldnt think that Ford would have been casting 223 engines that late. Now the A stands for automibile engine I believe, so maybe there is a car engine from the 70s that would bolt up to the older bellhousings. I dont know about that. I know Ford made a few small sixes for cars in the 70's. The truck engines like 240/300 carry #s like C5TE/D5TE. Hopefully someone can straighten this out. Can you take a digital picture and put it in your gallery?

From what I have been able to find, the 223/262 series engines were produced after '64 for industial purposes. I didn't think that they were produced as late as '72 though. I thought the last was made in '67. Perhaps they were made even longer for export & you got one of those blocks? Strange. Check my website:

Maybe this will help? Pictures of your engine will help as well.
