tell me about the auto Shift Solenoids

"P1761 Shift Solenoid No. 3 Performance" and "P0741 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off "

Figured I would try the solenoid first and see if that is causing the sticking. Where is this located and any idea about how much one may cost? Pictures would be great!

(ford manual on the way soon...so I can stop asking these questions)

this is on a 99 ranger 4x4, 3.0 auto overdrive (3+od)

Too new for me, but the older trans had the solenoids on the drivers side front. You have to drop the pan for access. You should find a connector through the case near where the solenoids are mounted. Probably less than $50, if they are able to be bought individually, more if they are 'packaged'. Bolt in parts.
If you don't have the EVTM manual, they are very good. If you want a trans manual, www.atsgmiami.com used to be a good site for manuals.

Those two codes pertain to 2 seperate solenoids. The 1761 code is for Shift Solenoid #3 (SS3), and the P0741 is for the Torque Convertor Clutch (TCC) Solenoid.

SS3 FAILED ON = No 1st, 3rd or 4th gears.
SS3 FAILED OFF = No 2nd or 5th gears.

TCC FAILED ON = Engine runs rough/vehicle shudder/stalling at idle.
TCC FAILED OFF = Torque convertor never engages.

Both codes can also be indiciative of some other hardware failure.

its number three....or solenoid 3. My cousin tried to look it up at the ford dealer and between him and one of the transmission guys could not seem to come up with which one it is. Good news is that he came up with some extra gaskets in case one of the gaskets blew out and a set of solenoids and valve body that should all be good! I may get a seperator plate with the bonded gasket too. That should address the problems associated with the "Bad Separator Plate And Valve Body Gasket" issue as discussed in the writeup in the tech section. If nothing else its preventive matience.

What the truck did was over a 2 hour period start slipping and then finally coasted to a stop. RPMs kept going up and speed went down.

matt. Great writeup. That will help a lot even though that was not specifically what I was trying to fix. I would love some better close up shots of those sheet and something that would be really helpful is an ID of which solenoid is which. My cousin and one of the tranny guys at the dealer could not come up with which was which and someone on Rangerforums said he looked on alldata and could not come up with it either. In my case I am going to replace all of them, but for others that need to know which is which would be helpful.

wow, thats a lot of reading! Will have to get to it.

just to keep myself straight. TSB is the transmission seperator plate and when I get that I should get the sheets with it? Or is does that come with the valve body? I dont yet know if the valve body is new with papers or is from a used transmission.

other than normal stuff for changing the filter like warming up the truck and cycling through the gears.... is there anything else that I need to know about finishing the process (I am thinking of stuff like priming a power steering pump and similar fluid related things)

the papers came with the tsb. it will have you remove some stuff but i explained it and its in the papers. its all very straight forward. you dont need a new valve body, just some parts

Matt

edit, i did the blow off valve tsb as well

ok, think I got it. When I read tsb, its technical service bulletin. I think I am getting confused when reading your writeup about the TSB replacement (mine was kt3l5p-7m203-ja)

what is the reason for replacing the blow off valve? That was something I would suggest to go with your writeup....some of the symptoms that the fix solves. I found the writeup with my searches, but had no idea if it was for the problems I was seeing.
