Camaro front suspension

I have a '53 and I have been considering adding IFS. A met a guy today who has a rolling chassis with an IFS from a Camaro. The two frames are bolted together about halfway under the cab. He wants $100 for everything (frame, rear, rusty cab. The price seems right, but is this a good setup? I noticed a lot of people use Volare and Mustang II. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Check out the tech section. There is an article on the various IFS choices there. The Camaro can handle very nice, but your description does not sound like a typical install. Some PICs might make your question easier to answer. Do the welds look professional? Improperly done frame chop IFS installs are dangerous.

I looked at it quickly so my description could be a little off. I'll be sue take a closer look at the welds. I'll check out the tech article, too. Thanks.

I just picked up a 54 a couple of months ago from a friend who had put a 78' camero IFS. I have not run the truck yet but my friend had it running for about 5 years with that set up. He was very pleased with it. The cut and weld on this one is about 8" in front of the cab. I have also read the tech support that was previously mentioned by fat fenders. As long as it is done right that IFS should be fine.

I will try to post some pics of it. I do not have a digital camera so I will try to figure out how with my camera and scanner. I have 2 small kids under 3 so if I take a little bit forgive me and possibly remind me. My memory is getting worse.

Take a look in my gallery. I have a few pictures I took of my truck after my clip was installed. I haven't driven the truck yet so I can't tell you about the handling improvements (but it couldn't be worse than what I had before). I purchased 2 1978 camaros that had been stripped of all but their front clips and rear ends. I used the better of the two clips. A local guy (who had done this before) charged me $500 to do the swap. He later told me it would be his last $500 swap - it was just too much work (for him!). This reminds me, I still have the second clip if anyone is interested. I don't remember the condition of it so I'll have to take some pictures if you are interested.

Here is one of the pictures I have from far away. I have a couple closer pictures in the gallery:

My friend Bob has a '50 with a Camaro clip under the front... the problem I see is with the overall width... it seems like the wheels stick out a bit too far for my tastes.

Another option might be Jaguar front suspension... I picked one up at the wrecking yard, and it looks to be a sweet clip to swap under any old Ford truck. It bolts in with four bolts and isolators... and would put your truck in the weeds...

Anyone done one?

Sam.

rcflyr's clip looks to be just about the same as mine. The welds and cuts are about the same place as mine in front of the cab. My clip is also boxed. Make sure you measure twice and cut once. The guy who did mine is a "pro" but measured once and my wheelbase is longer. No biggie, but I will have to modify the front fenders.
