What else do i need for my Merkur 2.3L T engine?
Hey guys hows it going. I just won a 2.3l turbo engine from a 88 Merkur XR4ti off ebay for $177. The guy says the turbo needs to be rebuilt, its leaking oil into the engine. Well this is what the auction says: You get the complete engine....wiring harness,VAM, and computer included. This engine has 89,000 actual miles on it. It runs great, however the turbo needs rebuilt,as it's leaking oil into the intake tract, and causing the engine to smoke. I ran a flex pipe from the intake to the VAM,bypassing the turbo,as a test, and the smoke goes away. Well my question is What else do i need off of this car so i can get it when i go up there? Im going to install it in a 1993 Ranger with a 2.3l. Also am i better off buying a new turbo off of ebay or getting this one rebuilt? The new ones run about $200. This is a Garrett T3 turbo. Also what other turbo would i be able to replace it with ease? Sry for so many questions. Thanks.

here are a few good points...
it is a T-3 turbo, good quick spooling, reliable, rebuildable, and there are so many ways to upgrade that turbo. from building a hybrid (T-3/T-4) to swapping in a much larger turbo (t-28).
the block SHOULD just bolt right into your engine bay with little to no modification. it is a FORD motor so no one will bash you for building a mixed breed.
I would get the ecu, wiring harnesses, tranny, and all other parts that wouldn't be commonly found at your local parts store. nice thing is, they used that same motor in a large variety of cars ranging from the courier/ranger to mustangs/capri and even t-birds so parts should not be incredibly hard to find.
they did this swap on Chop Cut Rebuild (first season) on Speed Channel, that may be a good refference if you do some research.
find a good tuner site/club that has alot of turbo guys. I will suggest this site w w w (dot) nismokc (dot) com. it is a nissan site which I am a part of. there are people there willing to help out and/or get you pointed in the right direction. there are other sites specific to the XR4Ti, just do a search on google and you should find a good site.
I hope this helps out.
