removing steering gear box

removing steering gear box
My steering gear box (an extra one I had) has been rebuilt and I am about ready to replace the one in my truck.
* Does the steering column tube need to come out of the truck or will the shaft slide right in, if the truck is up on a lift of course?
If so:
*Do the pedal plates (in the floor board) have to be removed?
If so:
*Does the steering column bracket (that attaches to the dash) have to be removed or loosened?
I want to switch the steering gear boxes with as little disruption to the interior as possible, because I am afraid one thing will lead to another and so on...
thanks, abe

The steering shaft should slide right out if you have it on a lift and have the three or four feet of clearance needed to pull it out. As you know, you need to remove the steering wheel and loosen the clamp that holds the steering tube to the gear box. You might also have to loosen the column bracket under the dash since you'll need a little wiggle room to get the gearbox inside the frame rail although once you have the gearbox unbolted you might be able to rotate it to a side that needs less clearance.
