I have a 2.0 thats in a 83 ranger and would like to simplify it by removing the smog stuff.The truck wont idle good right now and Im going through it part by part,but I feel all those little 24 year old plastic parts may be a big part of my problem.I have seen some race and dune buggy 2.0 without 10 miles of hoses,I would just like some help with how to go about this.Thanks

 

Well, even though your state may not require emissions testing it's still against Federal law to remove or alter your emissions equipment. You're probably correct about the old plastic fittings being the most likely source of trouble, as well as old brittle or split vacuum hoses. I'd try to get it working properly as originally equipped.

 

10 miles of hoses? I told you a million times, don't exaggerate! ;-)

I feel your pain; we have no restrictions up here, but as soon as you disconnnect some of this stuff, the computer freaks out, and engine runs like really badly...

The vehicles that do have smog devices, when properly tuned and maintained, do make the vehicle run more efficently because w/o them they run like crapola and the vehicle is tuned to each and every individual device and is all controlled throught the PCM/Computer...
(Some have several...YIKES)!

I had/have to do research whenever a problem arrises and when need be I can always rely on the people here @ FTE to point me in the right direction!

My main idea when buying this truck was cheap and simple.The guy I bought it from said it didnt need to go thru emmision testing because of how old it is.Well, that wasnt true,it will have to be tested.I have seen a few 2.0 race motors and was hoping to do something like that-like a old car.I didnt want to be chasing down leaks on tons of tiny dry-roted devices that may or may not work.I rebuilt the carb and it runs good after warming up, but I have decided to sell the truck as I have bought a 03' with the 4.0 that has 30,000 miles on it.thanks for the advise.

 

Generally speaking, 25 is the age when emissions do not count.

 

Pretty hard to generalize that as it varies so much from state to state. Here in Ca. it used to be 30 years but our Guvernator changed it recently to go back to 1975 and stay there...and of course, many states don't have testing at all. But as I mentioned above, Federal law still requires you to leave all original emissions equipment intact and installed, it's just not something that's checked in most cases. If you were to remove it all and got pulled over for any reason, and the cop just happened to be in a really bad mood and decided to poke around under the hood, he could make you have a very bad day...

 

Proving that you were the one who removed the smog equipment would be a bit tough I would imagine.

 

I don't think they care who actually removed it. It's assumed that the owner of record has knowledge of what's under the hood and it's his responsiblility to make sure the emissions equipment is in place and functional.

 

Yeah, they would come up with some excuse to fry you for it.

I found that after screwing with (removing) the emissions equipment my Ranger it runs like crapola!

All those devices are incorporated into the tuning of the vehicle's engine and the brains that created these devices knew that there would be people that would want to remove them!

And the other reason for removal is because people can't fix these vehicles like the old time ways and it's because of "Lack-Of-Understanding" about such devices!

This is one reason why FTE exsists!!

All of us here at FTE work together in resolving these complex problems because none of us are rocket scientists...At least I don't think none of us are!
