Pertronix Install problem. Wrong part #?
I just got my pertronix ignitor and when I went to install it, I found that it did not fit. it's probably my fault because I looked up the part number myself and ordered it from summit.
from Pertronix web site it says the Y block part number is 1282 but this is for 54-56 Y's. I just noticed that it says that number 1281 is for all V8's from 57-74 but it doesn't specify Y-blocks.
I'm assuming that 1281 is the number I need? I think I was thrown off by the 1282 being for Y-blocks. Is this the case? Is 1281 actually the part I need for a 1964 292?
Thanks,
Mike

be careful
Just a word of caution about those pertronix units, you can burn them up. I have a '49 ford with a 302 in it and a pertronix unit. I have it wired to use the original push button start. I had the ignition on for periods of time without the engine running when I was wiring and testing the dash and the next day when I went to hit the start buton ... nothing. $89.00 in the trash. It is in the really fine print on the instructions to always have the engine cranking when you have juice to the pertronix unit.
Hope that saves someone the better part of a c-note.

I had a similar problem as that reported by strato1, except the coil became junk also. OPUS reported on 12-29-04 that he had talked to the Pertronix people and that the Pertronix unit does not fire well if at all at low voltages, say 7 or 8 volts. So if you ever find yourself with a low battery, you will need to get it charged to start the motor (wouldn't be able to do a rolling pop the clutch start). Just an FYI. I'm not trying to discourage you from a Pertronix purchase. They are a big improvement over points IMO.
