1974 f250 supercab
dear friends,
Right now i have a 1974 ford f250 supercab! i don't do alot of hauling i mainly use the truck when i need to haul something or just to drive. it currently has a 390 but with gas prices going up i am concerned with its gas usesage. anyways how this applies to this forum is that i am considering switching the 390 for a 300 I 6. the only problem is that i am concerned it won't be able to make the f250 break any speed limits. and when i have an emergency like i been having lately the my vehical has to be able to break a few speed limts. by emergency i mean my grandma being on her death bed and my children having asthma attacks. you guys tell me i am stupid for wanting to do the switch? would the 300i6 be able to make the truck get down the road occasionaly. and if so what kind of gas mileage should i expect if i am gentle with the foot. thanks in advanced for the help. o and just to let ya know the truck is a 2wd and it has ac which i would like for it to still work when i do the swap.
sincerly,
John T.

What kind of mileage do you get now? A well tuned V-8 in the cubic inch range of yours can/should get low to mid teens, while it seems the mileage claims for the 300 go from low to high teens (I've only seen a couple of 20+ MPG claims from the 300); I'd crunch some numbers to make sure it is cost effective before going through with the swap.
