Limited Slip rear end

I want to replace my stock rear end with limited slip. I got a price quote for $300 for the slip unit. Is this a good price? Can someone tell me everything I need to change from stock to achieve the limited slip?

Thanks

Does that price quote installation? If so, go for it. If not, start asking a lot of questions: What brand? What warranty?
What level of part is it?

LS go around $250-$300, but you can do quite a bit better by getting apples-apples prices from the mail order discount houses, and if you play it right you can beat up the local guys pretty well on parts.

That does not include installation. What brands and mail order companies do you suggest? I have never done any transmission work before other than changing the U joints.

Thanks

I replaced the 3.31 gears and open diff in my '95 F-150 with a 3.73 and Ford Traclock. The whole thing including instllation was around $800.00. I used Ford Motorsport parts because they are usually cheaper than over the counter Ford dealer parts, and they are identical!

I bought a rebuilt 3.55 posi with 31 spline at a local swap meet for $375 and my mechanic threw it in for $100. It replaced my 2.73 open.

A 31 spline Ford Motorsports Trac-lok will run you $250 from Summit, by the time you add gears, install kit, a new exciter ring (if you have an electronic odometer) and other miscellany, count on having $600-650 in parts in the job. You can get it installed for another $200 or do it yourself if you've got the tools and know-how. I just did the rear end on my 96, and I'll probably never do another if I can avoid it. There are some jobs it's worth paying to have done and a rear end setup is worth every penny of what it costs.

Why not go with one of the locker options rather then go through the hassle of setting up a new ring and pinion. I hate having to mess with the shims. I have used the powermax lockers and they are a breeze to install and they work better than a stock posi-trac.

I am not familiar with the Powermax lockers. What makes them better and easier? Is there a site where I can check them out and maybe order from?

Thanks
