Front main seal install

I have an aluminum front timing cover. The old seal was installed from the exterior side of the cover. I just read in a manual that the seal on aluminum covers should be installed from the interior side of the cover. Does that make sense to you?

I think they make two different covers. One the seal go's in from the inside and the other the seal go's in from the outside. When I've bought seals they have asked which cover I had.
