How do you like your Supercrew???

Hello all, I humbly request all you supercrew owners out there to take a minute and let me know how you like your Supercrew. I am shopping for a replacement for my 1995 F150 Supercab 4x4 with a 302 and 5 speed, and I really like the Supercrew F150's. The ones that I have test drove have the 5.4L engine, and it seems to have a lot of power. I will be pulling a 2 horse trailer occasionally, and a car trailer occasionally. I'd like more power than my current 302, but don't want to spend the bucks on a Powerstroke, or a gas guzzling v-10. I currently have my eye on a 2001 supercrew, specifically I'd like to know the following:

Is there anything to look out for on a 2000-2003 supercrew, mechanically or cosmetically?
Do they tow trailers well?
Have any of you put a body lift on your Supercrew?
If so, how do you like it?
What kind of mileage numbers are you getting (5.4L owners specifically)?

That's all I can think of for now, thank you very much for your time.
Pat

I love my '03 supercrew. I pull a double snowmobile trailer (loaded) all winter long and a 20 foot boat all summer. The boat with gas and cargo is about 4000# and I usually have four adults in the cab. You never know you are pulling anything. The 5.4 really has all the power I need for my use. When towing I usually get about 11 to 12 MPG. Commuting to work is part highway, part secondary roads (45MPH) and I average 15 MPG.
The drive line is kind of "clunky" but is has never gotten worse in 50K miles, and when you try to go down a couple of gears with the automatic transmission and power up a hill, it bangs into gear kind of hard. This, too, has never gotten worse. In fact there is a TSB which says this is "normal". I might just believe it.
I stuffed about $1K of stereo equipment into it with the amps behind the rear panel and a sub under the seat in a homemade box for the 2 hour commute.
I don't mind the fuel mileage; I used to own a dakota quad cab with the 4.7L engine and only got 17 MPG, so I'm happy with 15 and twice the truck. I has a tight ride and sometimes it can get a little bouncy, but it still rides better than my wifes honda accord. It is also quieter.
Please visit my web page. If you click on my screen name you can access my home page. It has pictures posted of the stereo I installed. It is well hidden and sounds great.
Good luck.

I just got my 2003 super crew 4x4 yesterday. I got the king ranch edition and I love it so far. I had a 4 hour drive home and I got just under 17mpg. Other than that I can't really help you out yet.

I have an 01 with the 4.6L. As for pulling, I pull my snowmobile trailer just fine. The 4 doors is nice.

01 screw

i'm sure that there are those that have had problems with thier truck but i can't speak highly enough about mine. i think that ford really got it right with this line. my trannie is firm like above and the mileage could be better but this is a truck that i really enjoy driving. power unmodified is great and the 5.4 is a great all round engine. i went from a f250 psd x cab, to this truck for the four doors and the all round package that is the super crew. i will never go back to an x cab ruck again.

That 180 thermostat is going to keep mileage in the tank. It can keep the engine in open loop and cause the a/f mixture to be overly rich. Get rid of it.

I have my fans set to keep the engine @ 198-206 F, should I still remove the T'stat?
Thanks for the info.

Hello, I have a 03 supercrew 4x4, 5.4 litre, 3.55 axle ratio, auto trans, xlt trim. I love this truck, its ride is excellent, interior noise is minimal, power is good, and mileage is what is to be expected, I haven't checked lately but I feel that it is in the high teens. I pull a 20ft holiday trailer during the summer and found that I hardly know it's even there. I've installed airbags on the rear suspension for a little more support when pulling the trailer. I've also have a bedcover and a brushguard on the front. The only problem I have had was with the rear end howling at around 50mph only during coasting, not through accelerating or stopping. I just got it back from the dealer shop last week, the tech who was working on it is very good and very trustworthy and said that Ford changed suppliers for the ring and pinion on the rear for these trucks in 2003. Due to a minor miscue in the machining, that is what is causing this howl. He mentioned that this very common on all f150 pickups in 2003 with 3.55 ratio with the 5.4 engine. He said that there is no immediate fix at this moment and that Ford is unsure if they are going to recall this problem unless it becomes a safety issue, which so far does not look that way. He said he went through the same problem with his pickup, and after 4 gear sets the problem got worse, so he put the original set back in and changed the gear oil to 80w90 instead of 75w140, and howling is very low. Other than that minor problem it has been an excellent truck. Has any one else had this howl?

I have the howl, too. It also happens at around 50MPH, but gets louder when I gas it to hold it at 50. My dodge did the same thing. I was told not to worry.
