If you torqued to specs you will be fine.

The Bj's are made by Duralast and didn't have any paperwork specs. I hope I didn't screw up. The knuckle was as tight as hell when I torqued the bj's. I could barely move it to install the tie rod in place. Let me know what all of you think, Bill
My torquing instructions were very specific. I don't know what documentation your ball joints had but the Moog instructions were the same as the Ford requirements for OEM ball joints:

1. Torque the lower ball joint to 35 lb-ft.
2. Torque the upper ball joint to 69 lb-ft.
3. Torque the lower ball joint to 150 lb-ft.

I was able to move my knuckles by hand after I installed them. Many people talk about stiffness and that it takes a few thousand miles to break them in. So far I have had no problems.

brian42 I did the other side today and torqued them again to the tutorial. I installed DURALAST bj's and both sets didn't have torque specs. The parts store referenced them and said OEM ford specs. So the truck is all back together and it is amazing how it handles. I'm happy, tires are happy and I saved a lot of $$$. Thanks to Merc, brian42 and all the rest. I am very satisfied. Now to do the exhaust. Is there an area here for modifying/installing new/better exhaust? thanks again guys, bill

theres lots of truck sites.... i dont know if i can mention them here or ill get in trouble ... some sites dont like to see the others mentioned... as for exhaust though... i did a cat back magnaflow on mine at first with pipes going right out the back, but then later dumped them right after the rear axle... i like it but really it did not do much for me other then a nice sound.... im saving up for a diesel conversion but thats not for some time kenny

What I want in exhaust is throaty and noise if I want to get on it. I just don't know where to begin. I have looked at a lot of stuff online and our local muffler shops. The shops have nothing I'm looking for and they would install something they don't offer, but for a premium price, plus no guarantees (which I understand) not their product. So, again the quest begins. I can do all the pipe work myself. I have all kinds of stainless pipe and can get whatever I need. Can I do what ever I want from the cat converter without hurting anything. I would use the same pipe diameters as I don't want to screw things up.

awesome post!

Thanks for the awesome post. Unfortunately I'm at a standstill. the axle dustseal that the dealer gave me matches the part# that you have listed, but I'll be damned if it won't fit into my axle housing (tube). #F81Z-1S175-HCA. Although it does fit on the axle. --The O.D. seems to be either too large or to small--. I've already been back to the dealer once to confirm that it is the right part. I have also tried to match it up without it on the axle. Any help would be appreciated as right now I'm halfway though!!! 2004 f350 cc 4x4 6.0 srw sb

Thanks once more in advance.

The axle dust doesn't really fit into the axle tube. It kind of just rides along the outside edge of it. It has a nice tight fit on to the axle but kind of just rides wherever it ends up when it comes to the axle tube. You're using the same part number I did on my '04 so it should be correct. Maybe you could post up a pic of what you're talking about..?

Is it this seal?

Thanks for the reply. That's the one in the pic. Just seems to me that $23 is a hefty price for a seal that does as much good as one I could cut out of an empty milk carton... I guess that's why it's called a 'dust' seal and not an 'oil' seal...?

You'll be even more P.O.'d when the thing basically disintegrates in ten or twenty thousand miles. I am not a big fan of this design. I have decided that the surface where the seal rides on the axle tube will be a spot I regularly grease.

Ok, I installed the axle and tightened the hub to specs and now I see that it does just get drawn tight to the outside of the housing tube.--- 'dust' seal just about says it all. thanks everyone for the timely help. Anyone who goes out of their way to help a complete stranger (even if just replying to a thread) is a saint in my book.

Just finished up installing new ball joints and hub on passenger side. Couldn't have done it without Racerguy's instructions.

Good stuff.

Trying REALLY hard to keep it stock.
Current project list: New steel brake line to rear end (rusted), Drill and lube locking hubs to try to get them unstuck, body work (minor rust/chip painting).

How to install B. Joints on a F-150 2wd

I have my brother coming over tomorrow morning to install new ball joints on his 2000 F-150 XL, 2WD. I've done B. Joints on my Chevy Blazer in the past, but that was years ago. I'm mechanically inclined, so, I really need a step by step with pictures if anyone out there has the time.. Please email me at wayne@bowwowbonz.com
He's coming over tomorrow morning..
Many thanks in advance..

Okay...so I destroyed an expensive outer seal trying to get it on.

Anyone live in the Seattle (Issaquah) area with a seal driver that can help?

I can do the rest......but #$!@$ I knew better. That's what happens when I work too late into the night. I make stupid choices.

Need to get the pickup on the road.....Hunting Season is coming next weekend and it's tough to go when the Pickup is lame with a broken leg.

PM me and let's see if I can meet you to borrow the seal driver or give a little cash to have you install.

Thanks,
Mark

Did you make the home made seal driver, but did not have good luck with it?
