Hi, I'm new to the site but this thread is the closest I have found to my answer. I plan to change my ball joints and would like to do it myself, i printed off the instructions and headed the the part store, but the guy there said there is no axle seal for my truck. Is this true or is he just not up to date? I'd love to know if this write up will work for me before i tear into my front end. I have a 2001, 5.4 L V8 F250 Crew Cab

Thanks!

Some of the text words are set up as hot links to definitions, sponsors or something else. Just because it is highlight does not mean that it goes to something that the poster added. Hover your mouse over it and if it points to something that has "wwww.fordtrucks.com" and is not a .jpg, then it's probably something that the website did, not the author.

I can't decide which I like most about my truck...the noise or the smell.

I'm not sure if this is the same with your truck or not, but with my 2004 F350 I wasn't able to buy the larger axle seal from any parts store (and I went to 7 of them). One salesperson told me it was because of the ESOF (electronic shift on the fly) vaccum hose that is hooked up to the wheel knuckle - it is a specialized part. You have to go to a Ford dealership to get it. I went this morning and it was $70 or almost $80 after taxes, the part # is F81Z-3254-CB (for my truck anyway). This was in Canada so I'm sure it is cheaper in the U.S.

Hope this helps but again I don't know of this is the same for your truck.

...Dave

I made my own seal driver from a piece of 12"x 1 1/4" threaded steel pipe. I then purchased a 4" floor flange to fit the pipe. I had a machinist turn the flange down to 3 3/16" to fit the seal. The tool does double duty as well. Works great for driving out the lower ball joints witht the open end. Ford cost: $256.00 Home Depot cost: $17.00

I was able to get the pipe flange down to size by putting it to the bench grinder for a few seconds.

Just curious ... did they state how many hours of labor on the invoice? Thats a really great price to go into both sides of the truck like that.

Why not change the uppers while you were in there?

i wonder whose ball joints they used... moog would have costed about 120$ total... so that only leaves about 300 bux for labor... you couldnt pay me to do that for 300 bux

i do it on my own truck cause its fun though
