Pulley on Aluminum Water Pump

I have one of the new aluminum water pumps to install soon. It calls for a car style pulley, due the thinner shaft. Is there any reason why I can't mount the truck type pulley? Its center hole would be larger, but it should bolt right up, right? I want to retain it because it is chromed and I like the deep belt groove, even though I'm running a thin belt.
If it makes a difference, the fan has been replaced with an electric unit.

I guess the question really is: does the shaft diameter and pulley bore have to be the same for centering of the pulley, or will the four bolts accomplish the same thing?

It may be ok just on the 4 bolts. But every car I have worked on fit tight over over the water pump shaft. Maybe it is just to keep it centered. Maybe you can make a bushing to fit over the water pump shaft and your pully can fit over the bushing.

I thought about the bushing, but with the one end open there wouldn't be anyway to secure the bushing in place.

Use a plate of aluminum, drill your 4 holes and use it as a cover to hold the bushing in place.

Just a thought,

You will have to drill the 5/8" hole for the water pump shaft to fit thru also.

Yeah I figured that out. I like your idea better than machining a thin flange on the pumpside of the bushing, and spacing the four bolts an equal amount from the backside of the pulley.
This little project is what made me think to make the recent post over on the 48-60 forum, about your truck moving on.
