poor gas milage

I have a 90' F150 XLT w/302 V8, 5 speed manual.
Recently I rebuilt the engine due to a blown piston, before the engine failure I was getting at least 16-18mpg, now with about 5,000 miles on the new engine the best I have gotten is 12mpg.

The only mods to the engine was a better RV cam and the heads were bored out .20 over.

Any advice or help about why the mpg suck now would really help,
and any cheap mods to add that would help.

Thanks, 4x4F150

We can assume the rings have seated themselves properly since you see no evidence of oil burning, correct? Have you checked the new compression numbers due to the milling operation? I assume you meant 0.20 mill job to the head not a bore job which is done to a block not a head.

Detail the new cam. I would bet that is the reason. Especially if it has a higher intake duration or longer overlap.

Other than that, how does she run?

A new engine will always have lower mileage until everything wears some. You should start seeing some improvement soon. But I can't imageine an improvement of 4-6 mpg to get back where you were. Are you sure you are comparing similar driving.

Is it 16-18 highway on the old engine, and 12 city on the rebuilt engine?
