Larger fuel tank (Supertank)

Has anyone tried to change out the existing fuel tank with a larger one? A friend is looking at www.supertanks.com for a replacement on his '02 7.3L long bed. Per their web page they can replace the factory 38gal with a 60gal tank. When we were talking I liked the idea and they have a 60gal tank to replace the 29gal in the short bed as well.

With the way diesel prices are going I was thinking it would be nice to fill up at a cheap station when you find one. Plus, those long distance trips it would be nice to go about a 1000 miles between fillups.

Those bed tanks are like the tool boxes though right? Sit above the bed and take up payload space?

they do take up payload space. most that i have seen are L shaped and fit under the toolbox. i have seen some smaller rectangular ones that sit completely below the bed rails. once i even saw a tank that went over the wheel well.

Did you do the swap yourself or take it to a shop? I am wondering how hard this would be to get done. Looking at the Transfer Flow web page their 46gal tank is not much cheaper then the 60gal SuperTank. Now, the Transfer Flow web page looks much more professional, but I would rather get the 60gal if it really does fit.

My fuel sender was being replaced under warranty, so I simply had the Ford dealer put the new tank back after taking the original tank out, and charge me for the extra prep labor. The instructions looked pretty straightforward. I don't know about the SuperTank, but the TransferFlow tank is a beast! Very well made. I really don't know how you'd get 60 gallons under there without moving something or having the tank hang down a lot lower. The 46 gallon tank reaches into every nook and cranny of available space under there.

Ahh, good timing then.

I was looking around last night, forget the name/link, but I did also see a 55gal tank for the short bed. So far it seems there is a 46, 55, and 60gal option. I did like the pics on the Transfer Flow site showing how far down the new tank sits. On their web page it looks like the new tank sits about 3-4" below the frame. That sound about right for your tank?

This one looks very appealing. It is from Elite Products and is called Titan Tanks.

58gal for the short bed CC
65.5gal for the long bed CC

I was talkin to some friends at lunch and they pointed out that 29gal of diesel weights X. While 46/55/58/60gal weighs Y. If all that extra weights stays on one side of the truck does that impact the handeling or anything? You are talking double the weight in fuel.

Filling up my 38, which can hold 40 hurts bad enough when I pull up to the pump. $80.00+ fill'r up's REALLY STINK!!

The factory 38 gal tank will not fit in the shortbed (or I suspect Ford would put it there!)

The transferflow tank does hang down below the frame rail, but I don't think it's any farther than my skid plate used to hang down. You can't have the skid plate with the transferflow tank, but trust me, that beast of a steel tank is tougher than the skid plate was!!! (Speaking of which, anyone want to buy a slightly used 29 gallon tank and skid plate cheap, in the Chicago area...)

About the weight... you know, the first time I filled the new tank I could actually feel a really slight difference in how the truck pulled, i.e. it was having to work a little harder like it does when you're hauling something in the bed. (It balances out though, against how much lighter your wallet is after pumping that many gallons in, ouch!!) But the side to side weight distribution isn't something I've noticed any effect from.

This is copied off the elite-truck.com site

"These tanks are easy to install and fit underneath the vehicle without compromising performance. Made from the same polyethylene alloy as the orginal stock tanks. Fuel tank system works with standard fuel gauge and equipment already on vehicle. For Diesel Trucks only
7 years limited warranty
Each tank is baffled to prevent sloshing
Exceeds Department of Transportation standard #301
Made with durable Polyethylene alloy(same as factory)
Comes with a galvanized steel rock shield protector
Works perfectly with the standard fuel gauge system
Weight of tanks range from 73 lbs to 87 lbs"

Anyone have one of these....I am thinking about getting one of these.
