nylon ball on the end of the shifter missing

hello, my friend just got a 78 f150 with a 351w and a granny 4 spd. the guy he got it from said if you put the shifter all the way in reverse, the shifter will pop out of the slider or whatever and won't go back in unless the shifter is unscrewed and then the shifter reseated. he said there is supposed to be a nylon ball on the end of the shifter and there is nothing but metal. is this true and does the whole shifter need to be replaced or just the nylon part.
