Question Powerstroke vs. Cummins mileage

Any of you guys know how much difference there is in fuel mileage between 1 ton Ford diesel and the 1 ton Dodge diesel, (newer trucks). I know that my 99' F-350 generally gets between 10 & 12 MPG towing. Was curious what the cummins might be getting. I know that the guy I was talking to used to sell Fords and is now selling Dodge trucks and is probably favoring Dodges now To make a sale but he said that the newer dodges are getting an average of 14 MPG towing and the Fords are getting an average of 10MPG towing. Any other confirmed truth to this?

Man - about the only way you're gonna find out for real is get both trucks yourself and do a test. I don't know why, but everybody is always inflating their milage values so much - about as soon as anybody starts the "milage" conversation my ears just automatically close. AND...

Is it really worth owning a D*d*e to get slightly better milage. Afterall - you'd actually have to be SEEN in one of those things if you owned it!!!

I know, I'm just trying to figure out what to do. I'm gonna be moving back to Northern PA. around May or June and am going to start hauling cattle and I'm not to sure what to do to keep my cost down. It's very hilly where I'm gonna be living and want to keep my business expense to a minimum. If there is 4 or 5 MPG difference that difference can build up pretty fast.

I dont know, the Cummins is a good towing engine, perhaps the best out of the big three. The powerstroke offers more speed and driveablity, the cummins is very loud and annoying. Mileage is going vary considerbly, but generally the Cummins is going to get better mileage as it likes the lower RPMs more, but it depends on what tranny and rear end youve got too. If I were you Id look into the Ford F-650, it comes avialable with the Cummins motor. If I had to choose an engine for commerical towing, I would go with the Cummins.

we have a couple or them all, empty the fords tend to have a little bit better milage and when your towing the dodge seems to be better....personaly for towing i owuld prefer the dodge with the 6 speed manual, as for noise i dont think the ford is the quietest.....

Rowdyone is new and has a neutral reputation at this point.
I have seen for years in the oil fields of Texas, the Dodge diesel motor was a fine motor, just that it was a six cylinder motor. The thing has always done a good job on fuel mileage.

The problem with the Dodge was the truck. From all the little things like windows not rolling up to the drivers door latch not opening when the driver wants out LOL. The springs on even the one ton trucks was sup-standard for one tons. I have seen more than a few guys buy the new Dodge to in less than a month be at the dealership having aftermarket springs put under them as the factory springs will not hold up. I know a guy who has just had a new exhaust system put on his new Dodge diesel a little sooner than he expected too, this truck had less than 7K on it when the biggest part of the exhaust system fell off and when the back duals ran over it, that pulled the rest of the system off the truck and some from the motor. Not good.

The carpet always seem to come from under the kick panels and start to roll up and get nasty looking from just the lack of detail the Dodge has always had a big problem with from the corners cut. I understand your concerns with fuel mileage and all, to ask this question on a Ford forum is asking for some of us to voice our passion for the Ford product most of us here have all loved for years despite any trouble we have had LOL.

Man I know I have had more than my share of trouble with some of the older PSD's I have had, tranny and torque converters for one. Never had much if any trouble with the truck itself though. The old 95 model I have right now has been without a doubt the best truck I have had ever. I will buy another Ford next time if I ever deside to trade the 95 off or park the 95. The Fords even with the fuel mileage they may or may not get, I just like how I sit in the Fords to much and how I have seen the Fords hold up for year after year of abuse if the need was there for it.

Good luck with your seach for a truck, I like to say to not focus so much on one thing so much as the fuel mileage, there is worse things than a truck that doesn't get the best fuel mileage. Thats just another small expense that you can write off if your going to haul for a living. Small expense.

I really appreciate all you guys honesty and great comments. This is what a forum is really for. (Yes, the PSD is made by International.) You guys really are great, (most of ya, ). Don't worry guys, I probably won't ever do completely away with PSD's (unless Ford does someday install a Cummins under their beautiful hood.) Your idea might actually be a consideration FORD352V8. Thanks again guys. I really appreciate ya'll!

Dog gone it. Ken just stepped in so there goes my comments. I would rather be a strokin then a cummin. Would I ever give my Ford up for a Dodge are you nuts. No way. The cummins is nice but the Ford truck is so much better built. If you look at the pluses vs the minuses. The pluses out weigh the minuses. Get that thought out off your head. Ford,Ford,Ford. Is there anyhthing else.
