Unhappy Several Predator installs...?'s

I am slightly frustrated...here is what I did with the Predator tonight, and the results; I have been running the 87 octane tune with no problems for 2 weeks:

Filled up w/ 91 (highest in my area) and loaded the "Diablo tune," baaad pinging.

Per the "manual," I retarded the timing 15% and reloaded the Diablo tune. Didnt ping as bad, but still did at high RPM's

Reinstalled the 87 tune and back to normal, no pinging.

Here are my questions for someone more knowledable than me:

Why did it ping even after I retarded the timing with 91 in my tank?
Does anyone else run 91 with the Diablo tune? if yes, what are your settings?
Do I need to retard the timing more in the higher RPM range?
After I reinstalled the 87 tune, I discovered the timing was still retarded from when I modified the Diablo tune the time before...so when you modify a parameter it carries over to all three programs?

Anyway, for now I think I am going to reset all the parameters back to stock/default and reinstall the 87 tune like I had...maybe I will get some octane boost or somthing and try again another day, although that is impractical. FWIW, the truck ran like a striped *** ape with the Diablo tune, until it started pinging.

Sorry so long and confusing, thanks if you can help.

Percent or Degrees?

I have been doing some reading on this forum about my questions. When the manual says to retard the timing 10 or 15%, do they mean percent or degrees? Im going to burn that stupid manual like I should have done in the first place if they really mean degrees!

When you adjust timing . The adjustment is in degrees. So if the directions say 10 or 15 they mean degrees. If you have a pinging problem you would normally retard the timing <

You misunderstood my question

JS66, thanks for the reply. I probably wasnt clear in my post, but I am very familiar with the mechanics of an IC engine ignition system. I just am not familiar with writing timing increments with the "%" sign. I was confused by that sign. I also know what detonation is and how to avoid it. Anyway, I have done some more tinkering with the tuner and have realized that the timing table they present in the operating system is actually just a linear interpretation of the amount of timing adjustment available in the program, at least thats what I can gather from the joke of a manual and going through it myself. Thanks again for the reply...I was hoping to get some response from people who are running the Predator and would tell me if they have had any pinging problems and what their settings are. Detonation is a bad sound!!!!!
