7.3 diesel into 1978 f 250

intrested in putting a early style 7.3 diesel in my truck will it bolt up to my c6 if not where can i find a conversion. I'm not sure if the c6 was ever used behind a diesel or if i would need the e4od tranny I would also like info on motor mounts avaliable or if cusom ones would need to be made. My truck is a 1978 f250 with a 4 inch lift and 35 15.5 tires.

have a 98 7.3 powerstroke in a 76 crewcab 4x4 longbox with 44"S. i am running a zf 5 speed, out of the donor truck, and kept my 205 t-case. and dana 60's front and rear. 80,000 miles and no problems. you have to fabricate your own mounts, and have the 3rd drive shaft shortened. just how i did mine, let me know if you have any specific questions.

Have a friend w/7.3 C6 in a 79 F350 4x4, be used diesel c6 trans case and guts and used the 79's output shaft. Frame perches had to be custom built but rest was pretty basic , wiring to glow plugs was only tough part to make it look stock. He has been driving truck for about 2 yrs and no serious troubles. I put a 5.9 cummins in my 79 4x4 and it was a lot bigger job! Not may mods to install 7.3..

I know of some one in my area that has put a 6.9 diesel in a 79 ford f250 4x4 but i dont know what kind of trans or where he got the motor mounts from which is what iam looking for. I have a 76 ford f250 4x4 highboy with the divorced transfercase. I just saved from the junkyard today. I purchased this truck exclusively to do a diesel swap with because of its transfercase you can put any kind of engine combo even a 2wd drivetrain. I want to do a 7.3 powerstroke diesel swap and am looking for any info i can find on. I think a powerstroke in a 76 ford would be awesome and i could use it as a daily driver too as i did some research on fuel economy for a powerstroke out of a 95-98 truck and they are supposed to get around 22 mpg unloaded on the highway and if you add the banks performance they can get around 24 mpg which would make it pratical to drive and enjoy. I love the 73-79 body ford truck bodystyle but hate the gas milege they get. I want to be able to drive this truck around everywhere as i plan to do a show condition frame up resto but want to be able to pass gas stations by and not have to stop every time i see one like i do with my 79 bronco with a built 460. So if there is anyone that has any information on the swap i would really appreciate it. I want to do a different swap other than the 429/460 swap.

Thumbs up

My friend made his own engine mounts ,basically the 89 7.3 frame perches fabricated onto original 79 351 m perches, not a complicated job. The trans. was a diesel 6.9/7.3 C6 and output shaft and extension housing of old C6 off 351m He swapped in some E4OD gears to make it a closer ratio. I can take some photos for you if you're interested. As for the powerstroke idea, he attempted that but the powerstroke was a lot wider engine and would not clear the brake booster or steering column, and he was going for as close to stock as possible.(no custom shafts or trans mounts) If you could move it further forward and go with an electic fan setup it might work.

Alittle off the topic but why not repower your Bronco, A power stroke may fit better in there because of the lower front crossmember, and outside steering box location . That would make a cool "driver" !!!!!!
I put a 6.9 diesel, C6 and 3.00 9", into a 88 bronco back in 2001, worked great and pulled a consistent 20mpg. empty or pulling car trailer. Sure made people look when you drive up.

Me too I want to put a 7.3L DI in my 1996 F150, I hate the 5.0L gas jobber, too hard on gas and too small on power. My plan would be to convert it to an automatic with the 7.3L diesel powerplant

The C-6 was used in the early 6.9 diesels, and in the 7.3 until 88. It may have been available on special order for a few years after that.
I think though, that you need the diesel C6, I'm not sure a gas engine one will work.
The C-6 is probably a simpler swap than an E40D, no electronics, and way tougher.
The E40D has overdrive and a lock up torque converter, but you need electronics. The E40D is less reliable unless you build it up pre swap.
'just my .02
Good Luck !
