I just purchased a 2002 explorer 4X4 limited with 4.6L V8.

I noticed that it made a grinding noise when starting from a stop in all gears except 4th. I returned it to the dealer (Carmax) who consulted with the local Ford dealer who said it was the "timing-chain tensioners" and there was no fix for it. I have searched the web and found nothing on this yet.

Anybody heard of this??

I've had my '02 explorer XLT 4.6 V8 for 3 years and 37K miles and have not had that problem. Nor have I read about or seen this issue before.
