Talking Thump sound on driver floor when brakes applied

I have a 99 250 5.4 It has about 80,000 miles on it. When I go down the road and press the brake peddle I hear a thump sound on the driver side wheel area. Does any body know what this might be? Please Help

Check the sway bar end links. The bushings on the mounting points brake and you feel the thump in the floor sometimes.

I've noticed this on mine recently also. Will check it out when I get a chance.

Thanks,

There is a bushing/isolator at each end of the sway bar link. It's had to see if the bushing is broken with the oversized washer/heat shield.
With both front wheels on the ground or both in the air unbolt the links at the sway bar. Grab the link and see if there is any up/down play. If it is broken you will feel it.

mine made an occassional thump on the drivers side at slow speeds usually when turning with brakes.
i got concerned when the wheel started shuddering while braking. i thought it was warped rotors, but when i got the wheel off, i could pull up/out on the hub. i assumed it was the infamous wheel hub bearing assembly and replaced it, only to discover that it still was loose due to bad lower ball joint.

Could also be some loose exhaust pipe, muffler, or some underbody shields, or a loose running board etc.

I have had all of these at one time or another and they caused thumps or rumbles at certain times.

Best bet is to crawl around under your truck with a good light and grab and shake all the exhaust pipes, running board mounts, underbody shields, gas tank(ther is a big shield on the tank) etc. Cost of diagnosis is free. Repair is usually a bolt or hanger.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson
