ATF4 MERC V same or different?

Had a interesting discussion with our local ford parts guy on these two oils. He said he was about 90% sure the makup of the two would allow interchange. With our wholesale discount at the dealer, MERC V is 2.70 and atf IV is 3.74 a quart. Also talked with our transmission guy (25+ yrs experience) said I most likely would get better results using merc v in plac of atf iv, smoother shift etc,due to synthetic makeup among other positive technical things I dont remember, but didnt recommend atf iv in merc v application. I believe im going with merc in all. thanks any imput?

I had Merc III in my 96 and switched to Merc V the other day. It made a big difference my tranny shudder is completely gone and it shifts much better... Just my 2 cents.
