What is the Throttle Body??

89 bronco 351 c6

I have heard people say to clean the Throttle body. I feel stupid because I really don't know what the throttle body is and how do you clean it. will I need gaskets etc?

Thanks

Think of the throtle body as the "carburetor" of aTBI fuel injection system. It is what your air intake hoses connect to. It is between the air hoses and the intake manifold. It is fairly easy to remove and clean, although I clean mine on the truck (if it was very dirty I would have removed it, but it's been kept clean).

If you remove it you will need a gasket to put it back on. Not a big deal though. Also, and this is important, be sure to only use a cleaner that is safe for throttle bodies. Do not use old fashioned carburetor cleaner. It can eat away the seals in the throttle body and then the truck will run bad. They sell plenty of sprays for throttle body cleaning, they are cheap and easy to find at any auto parts store.

ok, I took off the throttle body.. What good is it to clean the TB if the whole thing it is attached to is just as dirty? you know, that thing that has EFI 5.8 on it. That thing looks like it has walls of wet gritty oil stained walls, like the TB. Do I clean both or just the TB? If I do clean both do I need to remove all of it?

Arrow Haynes & Chilton Manuals

Having a manual is a necessity for maintenance. Having interraction with other people who know and have experienced the same issues as you are experiencing is priceless. I've never seen a repsonsible post that didn't get a lot of assistance almost immediately. I have seen frustration when it's obvious that the posting party is resisting helping themselves. I personally have benefitted from the forum and use both Haynes and Chilton. BTW, they allow you to help others also.
