1960 ranchero, should I buy or walk away

I found this 1960 Ranchero in the local paper this morning, called about it tonight. But it's got some mods to the body I'm not sure about, it's an unfinished project car. Which I know you can sometimes get into more trouble than the cars worth. This one has a louvered hood, which would be cool. Shaved door handles, I could handle that ok. But here's the mod I'm most worried about. It has been turned into a detachable hard top. With it being a Unibody vehicle that sort of scares me away. Also were there kits to do this or will this be some kind of hack job? Engine and Transmission is setting in the bed. 170 I-6 and 3 speed tranny. He is wanting 600.00 for it. I'm still thinking about looking at it. Oh one other thing did they offer a V8 in 1960? I'm wondering if a 302 will fit?

Thanks,
Delos

v 8 was not offered in 1960 i dont beleive, but it is a relatively easy swap with the right parts.

if the front and rear were tied together under the truck, it might be alright. i have never seen or heard of a kit for a removable top on a falcon or ranchero.

if the top could be reinstalled properly, that might be the thing to do if you go ahead and buy it.

I think I'll go look at it. Not sure if it's worth $600.00 to me. I'm really looking for a 68 to 71 but they seem to be hard to find here in Arkansas. I use to see them all the time at used lots and for sale by individuals. I can't even remember seeing one running down the road lately.

chech FTE classidfieds. There is a 1960 ranchero for 1000 in there. It interests me. But I'm here in Canada and the car is in Texas.
I'm looking at the cost for me to buy and bring the car here. It would be about 2500 then inspections to pass it to drive it around here.
Don't see any early Rancheros up here.
I like to find a 59 that could be restored and priced affordable.

yeah a 302 will fit...ive seen one where a guys stuffed a 460 into a 61 RANCHERO...ive alsoe seen them stuff in 351's...the only thing is i cant rmeber but with a 302 you might have to cut off those support bars that are going from the shock towers to the firwall..and then buy some new one that arnet big like that but look like steel pipe..its not hard to find if ya look for it

Thanks guys. Well it might be a while be for I can do anything, as far as buying a ranchero. My old F150 ex cab 4x4 XLT lariet I'm planning on saleing might be worst than I original thought. It's been down for awhile with a bad water pump. Even though it's got 312,000 miles on it, it still ran good. But I might have to put the extra 5.0 I have in it before I can sell it. Which right now the weather won't cooperate. If it would stay in the mid 50's I could get it done, but it seems like every weekend when I plan to work on it the temps drop down into the 40's or lower. I just don't care for working out in the cold. I'm just glad I don't live up north!

66gpw,
I'll check out the FTE classifieds. I have but it's been awhile. If it was in east or central Texas I could handle going and picking it up.

Jared,
Oh yea I've seen them shoe horn in big blocks. Have a friend that put a 460 in a pinto wagon. I guess what I should have said was would the 302 fit without any major modifications. As I have seen before you can make any engine fit, if you have the time, know-how and the money!

Thanks y'all,
Delos
