Tranny's for the 5.4

What tranny's were bolted behind the 5.4?

Automatics are the 4speed 4R70W & 4R100 for '97-'04 in the older body style (heritage), then the '99 to '04 Superduties got the 4R100. The manual included the 5 speed and 6 speed ZFs. I can't recall the 6 speeds exact designator, but the 5 speed was the 5-42. I'm also unsure about the 5 speed auto that came out in Superduties in '04 or the new 4 speed auto in the F150s.

Here's what I found in the BBA books concerning transmission choices for the 5.4L's (US and Canada F150-F350's only, no Mustangs or E-series listed):

The E4OD used on 1996.5-1998 F150/F250LD with the 5.4L. (I couldn't believe it!)

There's a real jumble of 4R70W and 4R100 used on the 1999-2003 5.4L F150's. (2003 & 2004 Heritage were not available with the 5.4L, well, not to us anyway, although "regular" 2003 F150's were.) F150's with a 5.4L and 4R70W use a 1.90 torque converter rather than the 2.30 converter used on the 4R70W found behind the 4.2L and 4.6L. The 1999 F250LD and the 2000-2003 F150 7700's uses the 4R100 as well as 5.4L SD's from 1999-2004. (2.20 converter for the 1999-2004 5.4L SD's/1999 F250LD/ 2000-2003 7700's.) Whether you got a 4R100 or 4R70W seemed to be determined by model year (Job-1 Job-2), 2WD or 4WD, and towing package on the non-F250LD/7700 F150's. Perhaps even phase of the moon at time of assembly. I don't get it. Gas powered 1999-2004 SD's were only available with the 4R100, not the 4R70W.

The 4R75E is now used on all the new-body F150's 2004 and up with the 5.4L, including the 7700's. They have a L370 12" 2.33 torque converter on 4WD's and 1.90 for 2WD's (4R70E for the 4.2L and 4.6L have a 12" L290 2.33 torque converter. Blah...)

The TorqueShift AKA 5R110 for the 2005 and up SD's with the 5.4L (and 6.8L).

The 5-speed manual found on the 1999-2001 5.4L (and 6.8L) was the ZF S5-47 (just a small update to the S5-42 found on 1987-1994 F250/350's) in a Modular bell pattern rather than the S5-47 from 1995-1997 in Ford SB and BB pattern (and diesel pattern too.)

The 6-speed found on the 2002-present gas powered SD's (5.4L & 6.8L) is the ZF S6-650. (With a smaller gear set than the 1999-present 7.3L/6.0L diesel SD's)

Yep, I have the 2001 5.4L 4R70W and the torque converter is too tight for me. I was trying to pull a stuck towmotor (buried to the frame in a gravel drive puddle) and in 4x4 high in gravel, it wouldn't even spin the tires. I had to put it in 4x4 low to get enough torque to even try to spin. My bosses 87 351W C6 4x4 was pushing while I was trying to pull and he had no problem spinning in 4x4 high. If my truck had the 4.6L converter, it would pull pretty hard. I guess they were more concerned with fuel economy that actual 4x4 use.

Let me tell you that not all the info in that BBA is 100% complete (I'm finding it difficult to say that since I use the Ford Factory BBA site religiously). The F250LDs and 7700s could also come with the 4R70W, see my sig for at least partial proof (door sticker also posted in gallery).

An addition to complete your info: the 5.4 was available in the '04 Heritage as bi-Fuel or CNGs (and only found in the 7700 package).

I don't discount the rest of the info, thanks for correcting/completing the ZF info I put out.

I replaced my 01 4r70w with an 03 tranny. I may have the 2.30 converter. It seems to drive the same but speedo is 50-60mph too fast. It pins while I am only doing 20mph. I am hoping a Superchips tuner can fix my problem. Any ideas?

My '01 Expedition with a 5.4 has the 4r100. I saw a '99 with the 4r100 (again, 5.4) as well. I get the impression the 5.4s commonly had the 4r100 and the 4.6 had the 4r70w in the expys.
