Hi,
Thinking of looking at a `98 F150 with the V6 4.3l. Would it pull its way out of a wet paper bag or is the engine strong? Appreciate any comments.
Lazy K.
I would tune into the 4.2 V6 engine section on this site. Some significant issues with early V6 engines. These trucks weigh a lot. Unless you are planning to drive an empty truck on level surfaces most of the time, the V8's are a better all-around choice.
I agree with Paul although there are lots of happy 4.2 owners here. It's a matter of matching the truck with your needs. If you run empty most of the time and don't tow much weight if any, the 4.2 might serve you well.
Typical V8 owner responses......
Ive built well over 25 small block Chevy engines, raced them, hauled with them, etc. And,a few Ford V8s.IMO,the 4.2 will hang with the 4.6. Look at the hp and torque figures for the 4.2 and the 4.6; pretty close, huh?
Even though I wish they would have just brought back the straight 6, he's right. You'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between a 4.2 anda 4.6 by just driving them. At least till you get to the gas pump.
Thanks Guys. I would be running light most of the time. I think you have given me enough to get me to travel to see it. If the owner talks right maybe I`ll own it!
