quick ford questions

Hello all. I'm new to this site, however I've already discovered what a great wealth of information is available here. Fantastic job fellas. Well here's my story.. I'm a chevy 6.2 diesel guy that sort of crossed over to the Ford 7.3. At least I will be soon (still trying to find the right truck). Anyway, I really don't know much about fords, or ford diesels for that matter. As I'm looking around for used trucks any certain years I should be careful of? Drivetrain components that aren't as favorable as others? What transmissions were used behind these diesels? Any superior over the other? I'm looking for an automatic. Also, what is the expected life of this particular engine? 200,000 miles or so? Anything to help me determine the right truck for me would be fantastic! I'm basicly looking for a good 4x4 rig to tow around all my toys and hopefully not destroy my wallet in fuel costs. Thanks for any input

lebowski, first of all condrats on switching to FORD I think you'll be very satisfied. All I can tell you is that the PSD is the most reliable and best engine out there IMO. I have a 99' F-250, Crew Cab, 4x4, with an automatic trans. I have 102k miles on it and haven't had any major problems. I've had to replace the rear wheel speed sesor in the rear diff. (20bucks & 5 mins) and I've replaced the front left bearing. My auto hubs need to be replaced with some good WARN manual hubs but you'll find that all auto hubs start having problems after a little time. My 4x4 still works just not in auto. But other than these little problems it has been a very dependable and capable truck. I get usualy get 15-16 mpg, however, with the cruise set on 55-60 i've gotten as good as 21mpg. I know someone who has a 95' with over 300K mile on it and the only things ever been done to it is he had to put a new fuel pump on it. It's still a very solid truck. I wish I could tell you more about which trans were used in what years and which ones were the best. I know there are several on this site that can. Let us know what you decide to get.

Thanks for the speedy response! This site gets better and better everytime I click back on here. Well 300,000 miles certainly is quite impressive. I have a good feeling about these 7.3's. Thanks for the info. I'll certainly be keeping you posted on what I find.

I live in California, and the hardest part is finding a used 7.3 from a private party.
I regreat selling my 7.3 three weeks ago! It had 168k miles with not smoke of any kinda....

I'm currently looking for a used 01-02 7.3 Crew 4x4 that is under 100k miles.....
Don't even touch the 6.0.

I have almost the same as kilroy99. I own 99 f-250 supercab 4x4 with 190,000 miles and no major repairs! I love the powerstroke! The only thing I have replaced is the power steering pump. I did about a month of research and found one from a private party. Take the time and do the research it pays off in the end. Also, welcome to the site!!

There was a fella in either the Excursion forum or on another site (RV forum) that said he had two Excursions with 7.3L w/ 1,000,000 miles (that's right a million) with no major incident. The rest of the truck had been replaced, but not the drivetrain. He used them for his work trucks (driving cross country) with good maintenance yo may be able to do the same.

Lebowski....

If you are used to stock 6.2's, any Powerstroke you buy will feel like a cruise missle. The newer the truck the higher the factory HP rating, and generally speaking, the tranny in the 99+ trucks are stronger than the 94-97's.

Pick the body style and color you like best and drive the tar out of it. It's a quantum leap from a GM 6.2
