Brother's '92 F-150 reg cab, long box, 2 wheeler, 5 speed with 128,000 gets between 14 and 18 with stock everything- I drive like a grandpa, he dosen't- he gets 14 mpg, I get 18 mpg. Due to the good low-end torque of the 300, I generally don't shift at much over 1,700 rpm.

My latest was 15.68mpg. The truck did not touch the highway once for the entire tank of gas. I live in New England, hills and curves are all over the place.

She's got 114k on her, 3.55 gears and 31" tires. I have 33"s sitting in the bed right now waiting to be mounted and balanced, and 4.1x gears soon to come.

300 just gets better with age.

Shame on you Lead foot, for picking on us less fortunate 300 CID owners. when I got my six I bought it with MPG in mind. After all everyone knows a 6 gets better MPG then any 8, Right?

And everyone knows that a 12 has more power than an 8 right? or so they thought when the Diablo engine was put into the american supercar the vector W8, reducing its horsepower from 1100 to a mere 492, ending an american supercar and creating another italian pos...

Guys...I had a 300 in a new 79 van that was converted for travel, the carb 300 with the auto got the same mpg as I get today ; in 91 f150/eod/efi...with three tool boxes loaded heavy for the jobs....18 mpg the best 15 the worst freeway rpms at 1800 64mph....the curb weight being equal/ the od tranni and the efi just doesn't have the effect on mpg that i expected... any comments?

I remember when I used to go up north to Lake Pillsbury, Ca., I would load up the motorcycles and camp gear (beer, food, more beer), and would average 20 mpg.

I also drove up empty and got the exact same mileage, 20 mpg.

Go figure that out!

Hey Lasarus.
How'd you like those 31" tires with that 3.08? Im consdering going to 16" rims with 31.5" tires (265/75R16) and I want to now how far down I'll need to re-gear...and how soon.

Speedo Driven Gears

Just remember; those of us that change our tire size (different circumference) and/or rear end ratio from stock configuration, and don't bother to change the speedo driven gear are going to get incorrect readings in both actual mph and distance.

And get different mpg readings also.

Just thought I throw that in.

So how do you change the speedo? I used to have 3.55's and now i have 3.08's, and t shows it 5 mph to fast.

it seems to me like i can drive around the block and the gas gauge goes down.

Change the speedometer drive gear - it is at the end of the speedometer cable and slides into the transmission. 10 minute job, parts cheap and from any Ford dealer.

wow. i just did some research. in my earlier posts, i stated i had a 4.10 in my 300. the Vin Code F26 points to a T-18 and 3.55 rear end w/ no ltd slip or posi. i still get 8-10 mph highway. this is going by how much i put in and exact mileage from home to my normal destination... Good ole SRU. its a 55 mile trip 1 way. mapquest confirmed it.
