99 3.0L FFV, which oil to use?

OK, so as many of you have probably read in my other threads i just replaced the engine in my 99 ranger, and i'm almost to the first oil change after the breakin period (500 miles).

What do you guys recommend for oil?
Should i use synthetic, is it safe?
Which weight of oil and such does ford recommend?
Any gains in mpg with synthetic?
How much more is synthetic over conventional?
Which brand of oil, does it matter?
How many quarts does this thing take?

Thanks,
Paul

captain p4, the link that Dave provided is a very good one from this forum on the subject of motor oil. However, you still might want to consider posting in the Oil & Lube Forum where I believe you will get some solid feedback with respect to your particular lubrication questions, which go beyond the simple "which weight is best" query.

There are other related questions, too, such as: after this one, how long do you intend to wait until the next oil change? Many people would say no more than 1000 miles.

Also, it is the opinion of many experts that synthetic oil should not be used until the engine is entirely broken in. Other people who are just as reasonable and educated on the subject say otherwise. It's a good debate, actually.

So there's obviously lots of things to contemplate, and you are therefore wise to seek advice on how to best break-in your new engine.

Yes, there are a lot of questions and opinions about oil/filters/changes. I would encourage you to do some posting and searches about it untill you have made up you mind. I am in the process of deciding what to do about changes myself. Years ago the auto companies pushed oil changes out to 7500 miles. Oil wasn't as good as todays oil and I guess it worked ok. Synthetics came out with mobile one and they said it was good for 50,000 miles just change the filter at 25000 miles. Now the filter and oil changing shops are saying change it before 3000 miles. I am sure if I was in that bussiness I would say changes it every 1000 miles. I am thinking of using mobile one and changing it every 10,000 miles.. So who knows.

After visiting the Oil & Lube Forum myself I can see that the Captain has already gone ahead and posted there:
