Throttle Problems????
Hello there,
I recently purchased an 87 BII (2.9, 4X4, 5 Speed) and i'm having trouble getting used to the gas pedal. I've driven standard cars my entire life and have always been able to operate them completely smooth, but not this one. When i start pressing the pedal.....nothing......then......bam 3000 r's. Makes it pretty hard to drive without either riding the heck out of the clutch or chirping the tires everytime I start. With the vehicle off, everything seems to be operating smoothly.....nothing binds, and the throttle valve seems to be moving continuously with the pedal. Any body ever experienced somthing like this.......does it seem strange, or is it just the nature of the beast. My 2000 Ranger (3.0 5 speed) has a perfectly smooth throttle, along with every other ford i've driven.
Driving this things makes me feel like i've never driven stick before........any help?
Thanks ya'll.

That's not right -- and it's now how my (manual) BII behaves.
Does it do this when it's just sitting there, or only when it's driving?
If it does it only when sitting there, I'd try pulling on the throttle by hand, under the hood, to see if you can mimic the behavior. That would help start to narrow it down.

my automatic has similar problems when i try to take off before its all the way warmed up. im pretty sure its a vacume leak cuz it has fluctuating idle as well. i dunno about manual transmission but it could be the IAC valve if your having similar problems to mine. use your chiltons manual and it tells you exactly how to test it.

Today I experienced problems with my B2, I would push down on the gas and it sounded like it was getting bogged down, but my RPM's were staying about 2500 or so and just slowly going up, but I was flooring it, trying to get out of traffic and that's all it did. But when I got up to about 3000 it would speed up faster. I need to get all the vacuum hoses for mine, I know I'm missing some, I wish I could get a picture of a well maintaned 2.9 that has all the hoses, so I could go out and buy the hoses and know where they go. I think that's my problem.

I've asked around locally and nobody seems to have any answers for me thus far. Just to make sure the problem wasn't me (and not the car) i've had several buddies drive it and they struggle getting it into first the same as I do. One thing I noticed is that the timing is off by quite a bit. Its at around 20 degrees BTDC. I'm going to back it down to 10 BTDC today and see if that helps anything, although I don't suspect it will.

Though mine is an automatic, I had the exact same symptoms with by 2.9L 1989 Bronco II. It would really stumble because I couldn't increase the RPMs to get rolling. At about 20mph, it would go like crazy. It also was worse as the engine got warmer, so the previous owner removed the thermostat. (Wanna be techie.) It finally showed its hand when the fuel pump quit completely (in my driveway). I replaced the pump and ALL the hesitation problems went away. I don't think fuel pressure without loading the engine tells the whole story. Incidentally, it was very easy to change the pump by cutting a 10 x 10 hole in the floor. Just use a nibbler or shears to keep from cutting into the tank. Drill holes at the corners of your cutout and cut straight lines. Good luck.
