Post 85 F150 transmission crossmember

Can anybody help me out?

The transmission crossmember for my 85 is rotted out. It seems that finding one is a little more difficult than I thought it would be. I'm calling the junkyards, but I have to call each one because there isn't an interchange number and they can't search through the teletype. So far, no luck.

What years will interchange, 80 thru 86?
Does the engine and transmission matter, (mine is a 300 I6, NP435 2wd)
Are these easier to find in the sunny south as opposed to the snowy, salty north?
Anyone have any specific sources to recomend?

I appreciate your attention. This board is great!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 31-Jul-02 AT 12:30 PM (EST)]Your best bet for parts is always the south trucks don't rot down there. The best years for you is 80-86 and if you truck is 4x4 you need to find one out of a 4x4 because the drivers side dips down to clear the front driveshaft. Engine and tranny combo doesn't really matter.

Peter
Can't help you with the question but I did grow up in Springvale and have a close friend in South Sanford.

I've got a crossmember laying in my garage out of my 85 F-150. I took it out when I swapped my NP435 out for the C-6 from my 84. It is a two piece crossmember with two rubber bushings separating them. I don't know about the hardware though, maybe I got it, but probably not. It's in good condition though, just couldn't use it with my set up. I was hoping to get rid of it as a Tranny/Transfer case/ driveshaft/ starter/ crossmember package but I might be able to part with it. Check around and get back with me.

BrokeBronco,

So, you're from away now? Southern Maine is still here and still beautiful!

Paveslave,

Thanks a lot! I've found one at a junkyard, I think. It's out of a 86 F250. They still have to pull it, (It has to be lifted with heavy equipment and they don't want customers doing that kind of stuff. Sounds reasonable to me!) But the dimensions appear right and it bends the right way in the right place! Anyone aware of a difference in this part between the 150 and the 250? Paveslave, I'll be back to you via direct email either way. Thanks for the potential offer.

If anybody is interested, it would seem that a transmission crossmember from an 86 F250, manual transmission, 2wd is identical to that of an 85 F150, manual 2wd.

I was a little suprised to find that the mounting hardware appears to be metric! At least, my metric sockets fit the hexes and the screw didn't interchange with a 7/16-14 nut.
