Odometer

Is it true if you disengage your odometer on a 2001 or newer ranger the dealership will still know the real mileage because of the trucks computer? My friend is already over his mileage on a lease. Just wondering!

Interesting question. The short answer is that your friend may have bad automotive karma for many years, but little else. It is VERY illegal, but hard to catch. All the info passes through the ecm and could be recorded but I have never been able to find any way to access it if it is. They came out with digital odometers to stop this practice but hacker are selling software to roll those back too. There is some talk about an interlock in the odometer programing to keep the vehicle from starting if its not working but nothing to date that I know of.
