2000 ford ranger abs light no speedometer
#18
yeah, my abs light was on when I got the truck. I was having transmission problems and eventually got an overdrive to top gear back and forth shift every 10 seconds or so. Changed the sensor and both the light and the shifting problem went away. I didnt even have to reset the computer, it went out right away.

on manual trannys the speed sensor is on the tail shaft housing. if the sensor goes bad it won't sense movement. best way to see is hook a scanner up to your aldl under the dash. if its 96 model year or newer it should be obd2. usually if the check engine light is on that means there is a hard code. and for the abs part of it most code readers or scanners will pick it up and give you the code. most code readers will stream data as well while you drive. and you can look at everything that is going on including engine rpm, vehicle speed, engine functions. if there is a problem the scanner will pick it up and give a code.

on most fords produced after 96 and up w/ 4 wheel abs there are 2 sensors on the front and one on the rear diff in the center. at least the ones i have work on have.
my next question would be is raise the hood and see if you have and abs servo.
and do you have an extra cable along side of the brake line going to the front wheels.
that just means you have a sensor at the front wheels one on each side.and even the sensors on the front wheels are speed sensors as well. they sense movement.
or speed with the pcm .

hey guys, since this is such a common problem (my ranger had a bad abs sensor, as well as my current f-150 and dads f250, all the same sensor) can i get someone to do a write up on this.
include pictures of the lights, where the sensor is and replacing the sensor. it should be an easy write up and i could put this in the tech folder above. i hate to see any person with a 10mm wrench to take this problem to a shop since it is really a 5 min fix
thanks

I will stab, i think its the least I owe the board and matt! give me a week or so. Could someone else who has replaced it list some of the problems they had fixed by it. Mine was obviously the ABS light and then later was causing a back and forth shifting problem between overdrive and top gear. As far as I can tell its part number from napa is UP 530780 and is listed for $10.66. Anyone else have any numbers and prices?

My main symptom was the speedo staying on 0 til i got up to 35-40, then it would jump to life, but would tend to bounce intermittently above that speed. When I slowed below 40 mph it would just fall straight back to 0.
As for the part, I paid 9.79 at Advance Auto Parts in CT. They had it listed online, but didnt carry it in the store. In fact had no listing. So I asked them to look at an outside supplier as their own online catalog listed the Raybestos part. Sure enough he just ordered it from the local Keystone Supplier, had it in the next day. Part number listed is ABS530780.
