Trop-Artic Phillips 66 OIL

My wife asked me to stop into our local Dollar Store to buy her some candles on my way home. I noticed they are phasing out the Citgo oil, and are stocking several cases of Trop-Artic oil from Phillips 66, for $1 a quart. They had quarts and full cases of 30HD, 10w30 and 10w40 weights. This is a quality dino oil, in my opinion. They also make a quality synthetic oil as well. Just F.Y.I. Ed

Thanks for the heads-up Ed. I don't think we have Dollar stores here in SoCal. We must'a got shortchanged because we only have .99 Cent stores. Okay Romeo, I won't ask what the candles were for...

That's all anyone can afford after making their SoCal rent payment.

Phillips 66 is a division of ConocoPhillips, the one that makes Motorcraft oil. If it is API SL it is probably good stuff. "76" is the CoP brand that we see most often here. 99 Cents Only Stores just carres the straight 30 and 40 Custom for pre-1989 cars.

Thats a Royal Purple link .

I cannot prove it right now but I think the new Motorcraft is identical to the Phillips oils . I could be wrong . If Walmarts stop selling the Motorcraft I see no real reason to hunt it down . The Phillips 30wts use groupII/III blended base oils .... for a buck a quart

As single quart oil prices go up the Phillips and Citgo oil are bargains deluxe and if you ever run across the 15.00 per 6 pack case of the Citgo Synthetic grab some . It's pretty dang good and so is their 10w-30 Hi-Mileage oil .

They " Citgo " have a new oil this year . It's a 0w-30 SJ CI-4 Pao/Ester Synlube with a TBN of 12 or so . I would maybe like to try some of it .

It's a RP link because the forum software puts in a link to a sponsor whenever they see the word " synthetic ." But they only do it once per thread.

That new Citgo stuff sounds great, I have yet to see it, but I'll look it over when it does come out.

The flash point is right at 400F using COC method which shows probable thin 2cSt pao used to blend so it might not be the best summer oil but for the northern winters it would be hard to beat installed early fall .

I don't know . I have used MMO with it's low flash point and the fluid level did not drop . Anyway , here is the 0w-30 data sheet

http://www.docs.citgo.com/msds_pi/1019275.pdf

And here is the data sheet for the 5w-30 and 10w-30 Citgo Synthetic ..he he
look at the flash points there

http://www.docs.citgo.com/msds_pi/906818.pdf

That Mystik JT-8 10w-30 Rusty uses is dang good oil . At one time I did not like it , then I took my blinders off

50/50 groupI , maybe it's I+ , with groupII makes for some good stuff with that add pack they are using . 4 ounces of the Valvoline Synpower additive to 5 quarts would run out a ways in a engine with good ring seal .

Citgo makes good products and are priced right Mystik and Citgo has nice ATF's and both regular and synthetic gear oils too

Jim, that Trop Artic oil is a SAE "SL" spec. oil. I'm sure the Phillips 66 and "Trop Artic" is widely used in the south central part of the USA. Here on the West coast, Target discount stores stocked it in the late 80s, early 90s, but discontinued it. I had used some back then, and liked it, including their synthetic oil which was around $3.89 a quart. I am sure it has been improved even more since the early 90s. DOHC, thanks for the info concerning the Citgo 0W30 oil. I use Mobil 1 0W30, and like this viscosity. The 0w30 has been run in my 6HP Briggs and stratton powerplant, and the 3.5HP B&S lawn edger, with excellent results as well. I would not hesitate to try some Citgo ow30 synthetic, if I ever see any at a retail or auto parts store. ED

I have used TropArtic oil since the late 60's until it became hard to find. Back in the 70's you could eat off the inside of a TropArtic engine they were so clean. I use Valvoline now but I have no real experience with it other than it is easy to get.
