i also have an 04 f150 lariat screw with the 5.4 engine. this engine is driving me nuts with that knock and valve rattle. only does it when idling and hot. i hear it more on the passenger side where the cab and bed meets when i walk around the truck. it increases with rpm if you listen closely. i have 2900 miles on it. i'll take mine to the dealer also.

Triton V8 Enging noise
Triton V8 noise---My wife's 04 F150 is being repaired for an engine knock/tick right now. Our service rep informed us that there is a TSB out for the Triton V8 camshafts. We have waited three weeks for parts though, so, make sure the shop has the parts before taking your truck in for repair.

I appreciate the feedback on the TSB. I recently ran the tank almost empty and topped off with a different Amoco Station. I chose an Amoco Station that was really busy and one that I knew had new tanks and pumps. For some reason my knock has faded away but you can still faintly hear it if you listen for it. I'm thinking these engines are extremely sensitive to fuel brands. So far, Exxon and Amoco seem to be the 2 gasolines the truck likes to run on. I just had the serpentine belt changed today for squeeking. Advisor said Ford is trying a different belt for the 5.4. It is made of a really sticky rubber. Not only did the squeek go away, but the engine is more quiet. I dont get it. How does a new belt seem to make the engine sound quieter or is it just me.

My 2000 5.4 was a really quiet running engine and this sound is very annoying. Is this normal? I only hear it when engine is warm. Are there any other people with this problem? They say it is not the cam phase sensor. Are there any tsb's on this? Other than this it is the nicest truck I have ever owned!!PLEASE HELP!!

5.4 engine knock
OK, the knock is still there but faint. I give up on simple solutions for a problem that is probably a defect in materials or engineering. Ford is gonna have to fix this one. I paid too many $'s to hear this 04 F150 knock like it's got 200,000 miles on it and I just hit 3,000 miles. I have a clunking in the drive train also. I'll do my part and take it in for diagnostics. If they say it is normal and try blowing smoke at me, I'll put a for sale sign on it and start looking at TOYOTA TACOMA.
