1984 F150 5.8L Holley Carb problems
I bought this '84 truck last year. Have always had fuel delivery problems. Previous owner had carb (Holley 4V) rebuilt twice. I had it rebuilt recently and STILL have the recurring symptoms of ..
1. Apparently no gas in bowl... have to pump 10-12 times before cranking (cold start)
2. Upon starting, have to play w/gas to keep idling
3. After warm up, truck idles ok, but horrible gas mileage <10 mpg
4. Exhaust mechanic said truck was running very rich,, as per condition of newer exhaust system.
I'm thinking this may be a lemon carburetor, and have little experience with working on them.. I'd like a suggestion for replacement carb, ($$$ conscious) and manifold if necessary. I pull a 2000# boat occasionally, and otherwise use truck for utility purposes.
truck has 150K on it,, needs paint, but nice interior. I wanna keep it. i can't afford an Excursion yet...

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 06-Aug-02 AT 03:15 PM (EST)]Hey Just put a 600cfm Holley on my 84 f-150 302. Runs great one small pat on the gas in the morning and she will idle all day. Just remember if you have a automatic transmission you have to get one with the ford kickdown for the passing gear to work. Also have you checked the fuel bowl level maybe as simple as an adjustment?

thanks for all the good suggestions... i will attempt adjustments for the LAST time, then I'm going with a new carb.... this forum is great.. I doubt if Chevy owners have this kind of response... but then, they're too busy seeing how Jeff Gordon is doing...

Another thing that may be causing the hard starting and poor fuel mileage is a bad fuel pump, yank the dipstick and give it a sniff, if you smell gas, thare's your culprit.

The fuel pump runs off an eccentric on the front of the cam. When the pump goes bad the fuel leaks into the pan via the front cover. (how did you guess, another problem i got to fix on my 82)

I experienced the same symptoms you described in my F-100 for several years now. The previous owner swapped carbs several times to try and cure it. I stuck a brand new Holley on it, and it made little difference. This weekend I replaced the distributor, and most of my (truck)problems went away. The whole time, myself and everyone else thought it was a fuel problem. Don't know if that's the root of your problem or not, but it would be worth checking.

While it is running, take a can of carb or brake cleaner, and spray it all around the carb, and various vacuum fittings. Pay special attention to the throttle shafts and the base of the carb. If the motor speeds up, or tries to die, you have a vacuum leak you need to fix.

1984 F150 5.8L Holley Carb problems
I am original owner of a 1977 Ford E150 Van with 351W and 3 speed standard, and lsd rear, with 70,000 miles. All original (including exhaust!). Not sure where to post my general questions about this vehicle as mostly Trucks here, but I would think the 77 is close to those for most parts?
When did the 77 van style change significantly?
I find the fuel pump issue disconcerting. How easy is it to replace fuel pump? I cannot stand the thought of a fuel pump leaking into the crankcase-diluted oil= engine failure!
Engine does not use oil, has always been fed synthetic oil, but if the fuel pump leaks into the crankcase, then oil consumption would be hidden by gas dilution.
New brakes and hoses, and vacuum lines replaced, and Helwig swaybars front and rear and helper springs to tow a 26' trailer and race car.
Van needs more power, so considering carb/manifold conversion and perhaps exhaust headers. Wanted to convert to a 5 speed, but not sure what I should be looking for, and thought that having a 3 speed standard would make conversion an easy conversion, but apparently this is not the case manual versus hydraulic slave cylinder, etc.?
