Smile 53 Ford F100 hubcaps

Hi,
I was wondering if anybody knew what the correct hub caps are for a 53 F100. I was under the impression that the same ones for the F1's were used on the 53. Stainless with Ford block lettering painted blue. In the Hemmings book on pickups, they show the hubcaps on the test truck that look like 46 Ford car hub caps.
Thanks,
Jeff Barker

I'm pretty sure that was it. I hope so anyway, I just bought some for my 53.

Back in the 50's, there were 2 versions of the cap you're talking about. One was stainless with the block letters and the other was a painted version. They repo the stainless, but the painted ones, they don't. There were some painted on E Bay last week. They come up there every so often.

the stock hubcaps for '53-'56 were painted argent or silver with the FORD letters painted red. I am contemplating painting my "shiny" ones silver and then painting the letters red, but am afraid I would screw them up!! Any tips for how to do it?

I have a bunch of the stainless ones, some are missing the inner lip to fit on the wheel. They are good enough to hang in the garage. They all have the blue block lettering. They need to be painted red for the F100. Thats cool as the truck is red also.
Thanks Fellas,
Jeff

The 48-52 were stainless originally and had the letters painted blue. Don't know why Ford got away from the bright stainless hubcaps, perhaps it had something to do with the Korean War....

I just bought four used hubcaps on ebay. They are plated steel, not stainless (unless it's the worlds worst grade of stainless...there is some rust). Blue block letters. Are these aftermarket hubcaps or different year (my truck's a '53). They look like they've seen some use but they're nice enough for me.

I understand that some of the repo's are not as good as the originals. A guy I know bought some from one of the companies that reproduce them and he ended up dinging them up while putting them on. I guess the newer metals are not as hard as the old metal. I would rather have original but that is not always possible fifty plus years later.

I've been picking up these caps on E Bay. They are on there all the time. I've gotten 4 NOS ones so far, all at reasonable prices because of the repos keeping the prices down. And, yes, I've run across some of the repos and some are as nice as original, and others are so cheap and thin. No way you can get them on without dinging them.

Here is a picture I found of a '54 in a dealer showroom. Notice the painted hubcaps.

abe - my eyes ain't so good. I can see the hubcaps have a silvery color and maybe a little blue in the middle? I hate to ask, but can you post a closeup of the hubcaps?

Even some of the better made reproduction caps will dent easily. I bought a set from Bob Drake a few years ago and dented one of them installing them on the wheels. Use a rubber hammer and don't hit it any harder than you have to. I am still waiting for someone to manufacture a Ford block styled dog dish cap that will fit a modern Ford, Mopar, or Chevy wheel. I think there would be enough demand for them

George,
If I blow it up the picture gets grainy. I have some other color pics from Clues magazine (that's where I got this) that show the hub caps with red letters. George, I also have pics of a '55 from Carlisle a couple years ago that was a winner at Hershey the year before with the silver caps with red letters.
