62 econoline info

Hey all...

I just bought a 62 econoline this morning in Atlanta...been stored for 20+ years so not really any rust issues to deal with. The motor is out of it..Someone tried to put in a 250 and they discovered that the trans hook up is different..So the trans is out of it...

the original engine comes with it. I would like to be able to identify it...anyone have the id numbers to tell the difference between the 144 and the 170.

Also I found some parts trucks in the woods here in SC. One of them is automatic. As long as I get the tranny mounts, driveshaft and crossmember, and steering column..Is it a bolt in installation?

I want to try and dig up a 200 6..Put on a header and have some fun with it. I have to try and find all the parts to make it 5 lug wheels.

Are the newer Econo 5 bolt hubs a direct install on the early econos? Also what is the width of the 9 inch in a Econo...what if any other car had that 9 inch housing?

I have a 300 powerlock for a 9 inch...So I would like to put that behind the 200 6 with headers and maybe a little bigger carb.

Also...I have no idea what these things are worth. What is a solid 99% rust free Econo worth geared up and running...I only ask for insurance purposes. I want to get some insurance on it before I start spending good money and a lot of time on it.

If I can get the parts this week-end I would like to take 3-4 days and get it running and driving.

Any other tidbits of info or tricks that I should perform while the engine is out. I would of course go over the brakes when swapping out the hubs to 5 bolt and the rear axle.

Anyone have a good source for chrome front and back bumpers?

Thanks in advance,

-Benevolance

The valve covers on the '62 144 were Ford Medium Blue. On the '62 170, they were Ford Red.

Does this help?

Also, what is the engine code on the door sticker?

welcome, if you will post the vin and the data plate info i can decode it for you. the 250 is not a good choice for an econo as it is wider at the mounts, and has a differant bellhousing pattern. as jschira said the 140 valve cover is blue, the 170 is red.
the 9 in rear in the econo is an econo only housing.
the trans and motor mounts changed in 65, if the parts truck you have is a 61-64 then everything should be a bolt in. your 62 has had the trans added, wasnt available till 64,. if it has the donut mount on the trans it is a 64 trans, one year only. if it has a crossmember it is just a car trans. [longer tail housing].

250?

Jim,

thanks for getting back to me...I am not going to use a 250 6 cylinder. I want to use a 200. I was told before that the Engine to use is the 200 because of the minimum effort required to install into the truck without swapping parts and cutting.

the truck has the original non synchro transmission...I want to use a auto trans...Looking to get one out of a econo that came factory 200 auto.. with 5 lug wheels and a 9 inch rear axle....I basically want to throw all of that into my van.

Maybe rebuild the engine...Plane the head a little and add some headers. A buddy of mine has a clifford research intake for a 200 6 if memory serves...maybe I can put a 390 cfm holley on it.

If the parts econo falls through there are oodles and oodles of people here gutting mustangs and throwing the 200 6 cylinders away...I will leave it standard for now if I have to.

Auto trans and 9 inch rear is in the works eventually.

Look for the letters SH or FH in the VIN. The H means the Lorain assembly plant. The S means its a 144. The F means its a 170.

Only the 144 was available in '61, but both the 144 and the 170 were availabe in '63. Sorry, but I did not find anything on the '62.

Benevolance,

Are you still working on your Econoline? Do you know if the parts trucks you found in SC are still there??
