Bigger tires... effect on gas mileage, speedometer and ride?

I was curious to know what the rule of thumb is for putting on slightly bigger tires for my '05 Lariat SuperCrew. I do a LOT of freeway driving so it wouldn't be the crazy big tires or a lift kit, but I did want to buy highly polished chrome rims to give it the finishing touch to this beautiful truck.

I heard that the diameter of the stock tires and rims is 30.5"

What impact is experienced as that diameter increases? In other words how would 31" or 32" change things? Is there a way to "tune" the speedometer to record the speed and odometer correctly for a slightly larger tire? How does this impact ride comfort and gas mileage?

check here to see waht your new tires do to the speedo. if its not major the dealer can do it. otherwise you need something like a superchip.

gas mileage could be the same if you get lighter rims with similar tread. if you change out your rearend to make up for the bigger tires you can improve your mileage. it all depends on size, weight, width and tread type etc.
ride comfort and noise level depnds on the tread type you get, if you dont go too agressive it wont be too bad.

are you sticking with 18s? dropping to 17s and going with the tires that come on hummer h2s is a popular upgrade.

hmmm.. I never thought about going to a 17" from the 18", but that sounds like an interesting option. What brand of tire would you recommend?

It appears the H2 comes with LT315/70R17 all terrain tires.

That would probably look pretty sweet on the F150. Very interesting idea indeed. You wouldn't happen to know where I might be able to find some pictures of this type of tire/rim combination on the 04 or 05 F150 would you?

I dropped from an 18" to a 17x10 with 315x70x17 BFG All-Terrains. With an 8" lift lift, it rubbed a little in the inter wheel well. I hear some get away with riding 35s by installing Daystar leveling kits, but I'm assuming with an 17x8 wheels. At any rate, the bigger you go as far as rim size, the more you're going to pay for your rims and tires. Good luck!
