I'm looking for HP and torque figures for both chevy 292 and 250 I6's and the ford 300 I6.How do they compare in drivability?Between the 292 and the 300 which motor has the most ideling torqure?
Comparesions close to the same your of course and close configurations
Just curious??

Only honest thing I can think to say is both will work out equally well IMO.
Not sure but I think the 300 has slightly better torque numbers attached to it
- but I may be wrong here. Neither is a fast pulling engine from my experience
- they both like to take time getting up to speed with a load. Gearing plays a big role with these engines. Both do better with 4 speed manual granny boxes than with the old 3 speed autos. The 300 with M5OD is also a decent combo - though no where near as stout. At one point Ford liked the idea of neutering the 300's low end altogether on some trucks when mated to a 5 speed - 2.73 rear axle is no good for anything but empty highway cruising.

GM also made an 302 I6, but was only available for the GMC brand model. An even comparison,.. i think both the 300 & 292 are good engine's, i converted my 292 in my 74 (should i say it)Chevy into a 4barrel, i also have a kit on order for my 77 ford which has a 300 also, i cant really say about torque wise on the other hand cause the engines i have are mostly rebuilt and run pretty good. I thought I would look up the specs in my old Motors Manual for these two engines and come across some interesting specs. The following are the specs for the engines in 1968:
292 GM I6
170 HP @ 4000 rpm
275 lbs torque at 1600 rpm
300 Ford I6
190 HP @ 4000 rpm
306 lbs torque at 2000 rpm
Now compare those numbers to the specs for 1971 which is when the Gov't had the manufacturers change the ratings to installed HP and Torque:
292 GM
170 HP @ 4000
270 lbs @ 1600 rpm- same specs
300 Ford
190 HP @ 4400 rpm
294 lbs @ 2000 rpm
Kinda looks like Ford was pushing the numbers before Uncle Sammy stepped in. I have had both in medium duty trucks. My preference in that size of truck was the GM engine. It just pulled better. The Ford I had was equipped with a two speed rear axle and a four speed tranny. The GM was four speed with a single speed axle ratio of 6.30 with 9.50X 20 tires. The GM would walk away from the Ford with the same loads. Both were great engines. I had little to no trouble out of either one and you would be happy with either one.

dad has had both, both are good engines. hard to compare them due to setups. the 292 gm was in a '67 chevy fleetside 1/2 ton longbed with a 3 spd column shift std. it was replaced in '76 with a '74 F250 with the 300 and the creeper-1st 4spd. both were 2wd trucks, dont know the gearing on the chevy but it was pretty low, wasnt hard to do a 2nd gear startup when unloaded. the ford has 3.73s the chevy will rust less due to oil leakage! i liked the wood-slat bed in the chevy, kinda cool. i never got to drive the '67, (i was 6 in '76 when we took delivery of the '74 ford) but i drove the '74 as my "first car" and it lived to run afterwards. we still have it in fact. the body is shot on the pickup, but someday id like to find a home for the 300. wish i could make it fit in my ranger, i know-its too long, too heavy and the tourque would twist my driveshafts in half if the u-joints didnt fail first. but its still a cool visual. either way you go a big six is tough to beat, back 'em up with the right rear end ratio and you can do whatever you wish, not at any great speed, but you'll get-r-done!
